you to enjoy yourselves.â
âEverythingâs perfect,â Terry said, talking to distract himself from the way he was feeling. âThe food, the music, the lights. Youâve thought of everything. You and your uncle.â
âAs a matter of fact, Uncle Philipâs up in the attic now,â she said, âpreparing a few extra surprises.â
âHowâd you ever dream all this stuff up?â Terry asked.
âWeâve had a long time to think about it,â said Justine. âBut enough questions. Letâs just enjoy the musicâand each other.â
She pressed even closer to him, and for a moment Terry forgot everything except the scent and closeness of Justine.
The tape ended and the dancers broke apart. Justine squeezed Terryâs hand and went to put on a new tape.
Guiltily, Terry realized that Niki was standing by the fire, staring at him. She didnât look jealous, or even angry, but there was a strange, unreadable expression on her face.
Alex said something to her, and Niki shook her head. She started to cross over to where Terry was, but stopped suddenly, her eyes wide with surprise.
Everyone heard a tremendous thumping at the doorâalong with a growling roar from farther away.
The noise was so intense that Niki picked up the vibrations. Her mouth dropped open and she turned toward the front of the room.
Ricky pulled open the door, and the roaring became a deafening blast of sound.
Then, as everyone watched in shock, two gleaming motorcycles bombed right into the living room!

A ll Terry and the others could do at first was stare in shock at the motorcycles. The riders were dressed in leather jackets and pants, and their faces were completely covered with shiny black helmets.
âOh, wow!â someone yelled over the thunderous noise.
âRad! Really rad!â Ricky shouted, his idea of a funny comment.
The whole crazy scene reminded Terry of the movie Animal House , which he and Niki had rented a few weeks before. That movie had a guy riding a motorcycle up and down the stairs.
Was this another of Justineâs âsurprisesâ? Terry wondered, enjoying the crazy, chaotic scene.
With a final roar, the two bikers cut their machines. The sudden quiet was almost deafening.
The bigger of the two riders removed his helmetand got off the bike. With a sinking feeling, Terry saw that it was Bobby McCorey. Bobbyâs eyes were bloodshot and he had a nasty expression on his face. âNice party,â he said sarcastically.
âYeah,â agreed Marty Danforth, the other rider. He twirled his helmet in his hands as he checked out the room. âGreat place you got here. Too bad we had to knock so loud.â
âFor some reason the door was locked,â Bobby added. âItâs almost like you didnât want us.â
Justine stepped forward, her face a mask of fury. âGet out of here,â she said in an icy voice.
âGet out?â said Bobby. âWe just got here.â
âI told you you werenât invited,â Justine said. She didnât sound frightened at all, Terry noticed, but was so angry her voice was shaking.
âYeah, well, we told you we donât like to be left out of things,â Bobby said, forcing a tough-guy sneer on his face.
Now Philip stepped quickly to the center of the room. âWho are these young men?â he asked Justine.
âTwo clowns from the high school,â Justine told him. âTheyâre not on the list.â
Philip approached Bobby and Marty. He had an expression on his face like a teacher who was disappointed with his class. Terry could see that Philip didnât realize how mean Bobby and Marty could be.
âIf you leave right now,â said Philip, âI wonât call the police.â
âHear that?â Marty asked Bobby, his sneer frozen in place like a bad Elvis imitator. âHe wonât call the police.â Both
