to take the jobâwhich you will , because you find me extremely fascinating and want very much to be close to meâthis could turn out to be very educational and professional. Does that suit you better?â
When Robin didnât answer, he reached down and tugged on a strand of her hair.
âYou really donât feel comfortable with me, do you?â he teased.
âI just want to get to class,â Robin said, avoiding his eyes. âIâm late enough as it is.â
âAnd that really shook you up back there, didnât it? Finding crazy old Claudia like that.â
âWell, maybe you think itâs funny, but I donât.â Robin bit her lip, still seeing that pathetic heap at the bottom of the stairs. âThe poor thing looked so scared ⦠so â¦â
âSo what?â
Parker stopped, blocking her way. As Robin looked up, startled, his eyes held hers in a merciless stare.
âWhat were you going to say?â he persisted, his smile slowly fading. âClaudia looked so ⦠what?â
âLike she wantedâI donât knowââ Robin stammered. âAlmost like she wanted me to ⦠protect her or something.â
Parkerâs lip curled in a wry smile. He shook his head at her, and the laugh he gave held no humor.
âForget it, Robin,â he said solemnly. âYou canât protect Claudia. No one can.â
S tunned, Robin watched Parker turn and disappear through the door at the end of the hall. She went after him, but by the time she got outside and scanned the grounds behind the school, he was nowhere to be seen. Totally frustrated now, she turned and went back inside.
By noon, reports of the new girl and her accident had already spread, and when Robin sat down in the cafeteria, Faye pounced on her.
âSo tell me! How does it feel to be a hero?â
Robin shrugged. âAll I did was stay with her until the nurse came. Big deal.â
âSheâs Parker Swansonâs sister. That is a big deal.â
âShe was scared and upset. Anybody else would have done the same thing I did.â
âI heard Parker was there, too.â
âHe happened to be coming by.â
âJust then?â Faye snorted. âHow come he happened by just then? Just when you were there?â
âHe was on his way to class. It was a coincidence. Youâre making something out of nothing.â
âDid he ask you out?â
âOf course he didnât ask me out. He was worried about his sister. Is that all you think about?â
âWhoaâdonât bite my head off! I was just asking. I just want to be the first to know, is all. Did you hear the latest?â
Robin shook her head and stared down at her lunch tray.
âVicki isnât in school today,â Faye said triumphantly.
âSo what?â
âAnd she didnât come home last night, either.â
This time Robin glanced up. âHow come?â
âNobody knows.â Faye moved closer and lowered her head, her voice conspiratorial. âShe went out late last nightâ sneaked out! Her folks didnât even know. When she didnât show up this morning, the school called her house, and Mrs. Hastings realized Vickiâs bed hadnât been slept in all night.â
âSo ⦠was she with Todd or what?â Robin speculated.
âOkay, hereâs the thing. She had sneaked out to be with Toddâhe admitted it! But she never showed up at their rendezvousâso he just assumed she changed her mind and wasnât coming!â
Robinâs mouth opened in surprise. âFayeâyou sound as if youâre excited about all this!â
âWell, of course Iâm excited about it! You know how Vickiâs always talking about doing something really wild! Taking off in the middle of the nightâhitchhiking to Californiaâjust to see how far she can get before someone catches
