eyes blinked, as if fighting back tears, and her face tightened into a mask of soft defiance. âJust leave me alone,â she whispered. âPlease.â
Before Robin could answer, Parker reappeared with the school nurse. Robin stood up and let Miss Danton take over, and after a quick examination it was decided that Claudia had suffered nothing more than bruises and a bad scare.
âWould you like to go home?â Miss Danton offered, but Claudia shook her head adamantly. Apparently Parker had already told the nurse that he and Claudia were related, because now Miss Danton looked questioningly at him. He in turn only looked at the floor.
âAre you sure?â Miss Danton asked again.
âYes, thank you. Iâm fine.â Claudia stood slowly and brushed herself off, though Robin could see the girlâs hands were still shaking.
âI can take her home if she wants to go,â Parker finally said.
Claudia shook her head. Miss Danton nodded.
âWell, why donât you come back with me and lie down for a minute,â she said briskly, âjust to make sure youâre not dizzy. Robin ⦠Parker ⦠Iâll write you two late-notes for class. Thanks for your help.â
They watched Miss Danton lead Claudia off to the infirmary, and then Parker turned to Robin with a grin.
âSo. Now youâve met my crazy grandfather and my crazy sister. Weâre a family full of surprises.â
âShe wasnât exactly crazy,â Robin said, a little stiffly. âShe just happened to have fallen down a whole flight ofââ
âYeah, and she told you sheâd been pushed, too, didnât she? That it wasnât an accident.â
Robinâs mouth opened in surprise. âHow did you know?â
Parker shook his head and looked smug.
âI told her sheâd imagined it,â Robin went on quickly. âThat no one here would do such a thing. I told her the stairs were slippery andââ
âHer eyes got all big and scared, and you felt sorry for her.â Parker leaned over to pick up his books. âWorks every time.â
âHow can you be so cold about it?â Robin burst out angrily.
âBecause I know her. After a while you will, too.â Parker sighed. âSheâs just like her mother. And Iâm sure my grandfather had a few choice things to say about her! â
âNothing very nice and nothing very concrete,â Robin said, bristling. âEveryone seems to be making such a mystery out of the poor woman. All I want to do is get her books in order.â
âHer name was Lillith, and she wasnât what Iâd call a âpoor woman.ââ Parkerâs tone was sarcastic. âIn fact, after she married my father, she was quite rich.â
âThatâs not what I meant, and you know it.â
âOh!â He faked surprise. âI get it! Youâre talking about the suicide thing! Yes, itâs true. Lillith did herself in, but at least she was considerate enough to do it outside. And as for crazy old Claudiaââ
âYouâre disgusting.â Robin snatched up her books and glared at him. âAnd in case you didnât notice just now, Claudia was really scared.â
âAnd youâre naive,â Parker countered smoothly. âDonât be taken in by what seems to be.â He looked down at her and grinned. âExcept me, of course. Who seems to be a wonderful, lovable guyâwhich I truly am. â
Robin turned her back on him and walked away, but he quickly fell into step beside her.
âSo weâre going to be working in close proximity,â he mused. âHmmm ⦠this could turn out to be very interesting. Very enlightening.â
âIâm there to work,â Robin said sharply. âIf I take the job at all. I still havenât decided yet.â
âOh, I see.â Parker chuckled. âOkay, then, if you do decide
