eyes.
âYou should hate me,â he whispered. âI hurt you, and you did nothing, nothing at all to deserve it.â
She winced, remembering how it had been when heâd lived with his father. âI understood. You resented me. My mother and I were interlopers.â
âYour mother, maybe. Never you.â He looked formidable, angry and bitter. But his black eyes were unreadable. âIâve hesitated to ask. Maybe I donât really want to know. When Lopez had you,â he began with uncharacteristic hesitation, âwere you raped?â
âNo,â she said quietly. âBut I was about to be. I remember thinking that if it hadnât all gone wrong that Christmasâ¦â Her voice stopped. She was horrified at what she was about to say.
âI know,â he interrupted, and he didnât smile. âI thought about it, too. What Lopezâs damned henchmen did to you at least wouldnât have been your first experience of intimacy, if I hadnât acted like a prize heel with you!â
He seemed maddened by the knowledge. His hand on her face was hard and the pressure stung.
âPlease,â she whispered, tugging at his fingers.
He relaxed them at once. âIâm sorry,â he bit off. âIâm still on edge. This whole thing has been a nightmare.â
âYes.â She searched his black eyes, wishing she knew what he was thinking.
His thumb brushed softly over her swollen mouth. âLopez will never get the chance to hurt you again,â he said quietly. âI give you my word.â
She bit her lower lip when his hand lifted away, shy of him. âDo you really think heâll come after me again?â
âI think heâll try,â he said honestly.
She shivered, averting her eyes to the aisle beside them. âI hate remembering how helpless I was.â
âIâve been in similar situations,â he said surprisingly. âOnce I was captured on a mission and held for execution. I was tied up and tortured. I know how it feels.â
She gaped at him, horrified. âHow did you escape?â
âBojo and the others came in after me,â he said simply. âUnder impossible odds, too.â He smiled, and it was the first genuine smile heâd ever given her. âI guess they missed being yelled at.â
She smiled back, hesitantly. It was new to relax with Micah, not to be on her guard against antagonistic and sarcastic comments.
He touched her face with a curious intensity in his eyes. âYou must have been terrified when you were kidnapped. Youâve never known violence.â
She didnât tell him, but she had, even if not as traumatically as she had at Lopezâs. She lowered her gaze to his hard, disciplined mouth. âI never expected to be rescued at all, least of all by you. I wasnât even sure youâd agree to pay a ransom if theyâd asked for one.â
He scowled. âWhy not?â
âYou donât like me,â she returned simply. âYou never did.â
He seemed disturbed. âItâs a little more complicated than that, Callie.â
âAll the same, thank you for saving me,â she continued. âYou risked your own life to get me out.â
âIâve been risking it for years,â he said absently while he studied her upturned face. She was too pale, and the fatigue she felt was visible. âWhy donât you try to sleep? Itâs going to be a long flight.â
Obviously he didnât want to talk. But she didnât mind. She was worn-out. âOkay,â she agreed with a smile.
He moved back and she leaned her head back, closed her eyes, and the tension of the past two days caught up with her all at once. She fell asleep almost at once and didnât wake up until they were landing.
She opened her eyes to find a hard, warm pillow under her head. To her amazement, she was lying across Micahâs lap, with
