His Absolute Betrayal - Elise's Love Story: The Billionaire's Continuum (#2) (A Contemporary Romance Novel)
half of mine and I'll have half of yours?"
"—Yes," Lucent continued.  "I'm sure that Miss Tanner will gladly want to share meals."
"Oh," I said.  Well, yes, and that was that.  "Cut yours in half and I'll cut mine and then we can trade."
Sam reached into his apron and handed us two sets of cutlery wrapped in paper napkins, then left to get our drinks.
Lucent meticulously unwrapped his knife and fork, then unfolded the napkin and set it in his lap.  Steady and neat, he sliced his sandwich in half, surveying his good work.
I did something similar, except it wasn't nearly as meticulous or neat.  My napkin lay haphazardly in my lap, and I tried to cut the sandwich nicely but I might have gotten a dull knife.  That's what I preferred to tell myself, at least.  My sandwich halves looked a little ragged and worn compared to Lucent's neat and perfect split, but a sandwich was a sandwich, right?
Sam brought our drinks, which amounted to a whole lot of glasses.  He served the mimosas in fine champagne flutes, which was a nice touch.  Honestly, I thought he kept them around just for me and Lucent.  Or, at least I didn't think most delis were known for their champagne flutes.  The water and juice came in regular glasses, but that was fine by me.  Then he left us to our own devices.
Lucent transferred half of his sandwich to my plate, then half of my sandwich to his.  I let him, because he was much neater at it than me.  Also, there was room to make a lot of mess with these.  His was slightly less messy, but mine was enormously messy, so...
The napkin in my lap didn't look dutiful enough to take a lot of abuse.  It was for the best.
Pancake sandwiches at Sam's were also possibly the best.  I'd never heard of one before coming here, but I thought they should be more of a thing that people did everywhere.  He split a sub roll mostly in half, then dipped it lightly in pancake batter, and cooked it like that.  The inside was just regular bread, but the outside was more like a pancake.  Then he folded it back up carefully to look like a roll again, and filled it with an assortment of different things.
Lucent's had eggs and sausage with aged cheddar, or sometimes he got Cheshire cheese which was similar and also very good.  Mine was with the mascarpone sort of sweet cream cheese dip or spread or whatever you wanted to call it; it was more like a sticky syrup than a hard spread, made specially by Sam himself.  Plus mine had all sorts of delicious fruit.  It was good.  I hadn't eaten any yet, but it was good.
Lucent cut a piece of his off with his fork and knife, then brought it to his mouth.  I had a fork and knife, but this was a sandwich, so I picked it up carefully with both hands and ate it like that.  I took my half first, because I wanted to try it.  Gooey fruit and sweet cream cheese spread dribbled onto my lips and my chin when I took a bite.
I chewed, smiling blissfully, then swallowed.  Yum...
Lucent ducked towards me and kissed the mess off my lips, then licked down my chin, stealing away some of my food.
"That was mine," I said, pouting.
He grinned.  "You're going to make a mess."
"So you think you can just kiss me and lick me whenever you want, is that it?" I asked.
"If I kissed and licked you as I wished, I think we both might make more of a mess more of the time," he said, winking.
"You think you're that good, do you?"
He cut off a piece of one of the sandwich halves in my plate, then brought it to my lips.  I opened my mouth without thinking and let him feed me like that.
"I know it's kind of silly," I said, "but I like when you feed me."
    "Do you?" he asked.
"Don't pretend you don't know," I said.  "Also, you are that good, too."
    "Hm?"
"At... at kissing and licking and mess making," I said, turning shy all of a sudden.  I didn't know why, because I shouldn't really feel that way, but I did.  Lucent made me shy, and bold, and confident, comfortable, and timid but in a good
