the kitchen for company.
By the time she traipsed downstairs I was messing around with the turkey. “Whoa what’s all this?” she took in the groceries I had spread out on top of the counter and every other available surface.
“I’m making us a holiday feast to celebrate.”
“Okay, but I’m helping.”
“Can you cook?”
“I love to cook, it’s one of the only things I’m good at.”
“Well now we know something else that you excel at, only that will never be common knowledge, so we’ll see how you do with the cooking.”
We joked and teased each other while she made pies and I took care of the turkey and stuffing. We shared the side dishes, which I wasn’t really too good at, but she seemed to have a handle on, which worked out great.
We kept our conversation light as we moved around each other and when everything was in the oven, or simmering on the stove I cornered her against the island.
“Let’s go build a snowman.” I can’t believe how her eyes lit up at that. She was off and running for her shoes and hat and the ratty coat she’d worn the night before.
I couldn’t have that so I took it off of her without a word and wrapped her in my shearling, which was two sizes too big. I was already regretting my decision to take her outside, but the joy in her at the simple outing made me hold my tongue and go through with it.
“Stop fussing Julian I’m fine.”
“I know, but I have to take care of you.” I pulled one of my wool caps down over her ears and made sure she was bundled up enough before taking her outside.
It was clearing up a bit out there, but as I stood behind her with my arms wrapped around her and looked around, it was the perfect landscape.
A blanket of snow amidst the firs and pines, smoke flowing from chimneys down below. “You ready sweetheart?” I nuzzled her neck and she giggled before telling me that yes she was ready to build our first snowman.
We ended up throwing more snow at each other than actually building Frosty, but we got it done, even down to the carrot nose and my Burberry scarf. She didn’t care that the thing cost more than some people made in a week, she only cared that the snowman would not be complete without a scarf.
Back inside, the house was beginning to smell like Xmas, all that was missing was the noise of a family, but I was quite content to have my little miracle. Next year I’ll give her family.
I picked her up and was about to lay her out on the counter for a taste. I was actually having withdrawals and thought that if I could just get my mouth on her I wouldn’t even have to fuck her.
But the noise outside had me changing tack at the last second. “What the hell?” We both walked into the living room with her hand held fast in mine, my body shielding hers, just in time to see mom come through the door with the others not far behind.
“Mom?”
“Merry Xmas son.” Her eyes went right to my girl and they welled up with tears. Dad rolled his eyes as she approached us with open arms and grabbed my girl up in a bear hug.
Next thing I know I had two crying women on my hands and no idea what to do about the situation. “Hey!” that was my great contribution as I stood there feeling gutted.
“Don’t worry about it son, just let her get it out of her system.” He clapped me on my shoulder as my siblings and their spouses shook the snow off their feet and came over for hugs.
“How did you guys get here?”
“The jet how else?”
“What’s all that?” I pointed to the trunk- sized cooler.
“Food, mom said she wasn’t sure how far you’d get with the meal so we brought everything but the turkey, so brother, that had better be meat I’m smelling.”
I watched her with them to make sure she wasn’t overwhelmed, but she seemed to be holding her own. My sister and sister in law were going on and on about her hair and how beautiful it was, and of course the talk turned to all things female.
I had to step in when they
