jack shit about economics. Itâs a miracle he passes, but he does.
A B-minus.
Alton gets to keep playing basketball.
Adam gets a new client.
(And a few gray hairs.) )
76.
âYou never answered my question.â
Itâs Victoria again. In no known universe is Adam getting sick of seeing her.
Of seeing that smile.
She ambushes him in the hall, this time. Sneaks up to his locker and jumps out and surprises him.
(But itâs the good kind of surprise.)
âYour question?â he says. âSure I did. Iâm not jumping anyoneâs bones. I told you that.â
âSo youâre single,â Victoria says.
Adam shrugs. âAs opposed to?â
âAs opposed to dating somebody,â she says. âAnyway, that wasnât the real question, and you know it.â
Adam shrugs again. âI donât even know what language youâre speaking. Is this some kind of code?â
Victoria shakes her head. âAre you really going to make me do this, Adam Higgs? Do I have to spell it out?â
âSpell it,â Adam tells her. âIâm clueless.â
(Heâs not clueless, heâs just:
in disbelief.
Girls like Victoria Lemieux donât really do this.
Do they?
Do they? )
Victoria looks around. Speaks slowly, like Adamâs aspecial-needs kid. âDo you ever go to movies, Adam?â
Adam nods. âSometimes.â
âDo you ever take girls to movies?â
Adam shrugs. âNot a lot,â he says. Then he catches himself. âI mean, sometimesââ
(Never.)
âWhy? Are you . . .â
Victoria: âWait for it.â
âAre you asking me out?â
She claps her hands. âMy god, there is life in there. You just got asked out by a freshman girl, slugger. How does that make you feel?â
âNot very manly.â
âExactly,â she says. âNext time, smarten up. Ask me when Iâm free.â
Adam asks her.
âFriday,â she says. âI like horror movies.â
Then she turns and walks off. Halfway down the hall, she turns around. âMake a plan,â she calls back. âFacebook me the details. Pick me up at eight.â
77.
First date.
Adam spends a weekâs worth of homework money on a new outfit at Abercrombie & Fitch.
Buys that new Hugo Boss cologne.
He smells . . .
Boss .
Doesnât calm the nerves, though.
This is Victoria Lemieux weâre talking about. She has five hundred friends on Facebook. Adam has . . .
Twenty-three.
Huge talent disparity. Adamâs out of his league. And he knows it.
78.
âWhat if I screw everything up?â Adam asks Sam. âWhat if she realizes what a loser I am?â
Theyâre pregaming at Samâs apartment. Adamâs nervous as hell. Heâs shaky. Heâs hoping Sam has some last-second tips.
âYouâre not a loser,â Sam says. âAnd youâre not going to screw everything up. Just be yourself. Be normal.â
âThose are two totally opposite instructions,â Adam tells him. âWhat if she wants to kiss me? What do I do?â
Sam bursts out laughing. âWhat do you do if she wants to kiss you? You go with it, obviously. Lean in and kiss her.â
âBut how am I supposed to know if she wants to or not?â Adam says. âWhat if sheâs not cool with it?â
Sam just laughs.
âIâve never done this before,â Adam says. Heâs starting to freak out in earnest now. âWhat if I screw up?â
âYou wonât screw up,â Sam tells him. Sam watches him pace. Samâs grinning wide.
âDamn it, Adam,â Sam says. âIâm proud of you.â
79.
Adam meets Victoria at the bus loop downtown.
(âI donât have a car,â he tells her. âYet.â )
Sheâs cool with it.
That dope new Italian joint loses his reservation.
(âWeâre sorry, sir, we just canât find you a
