feel.â She scooped another serving into her mouth.
âHäagen Dazs?â
âI had a rough day,â Christian answered, crossing into the living room. She plopped down on the sofa and continued eating.
âIt must be going around.â Alex joined her.
âDo you want to talk about it?â
âNot really.â
âWell, arenât we a pair?â Christian shook her head, then frowned at the now-empty carton.
âAre you all packed?â
âYeah. I finished about an hour ago.â Christian exhaled and slumped her shoulders forward. âI guess this is my last night in Atlanta.â
Alex clapped her hands together as if to jolt them both out of their blue reveries. âOkay enough of this pity party. I know what we need to do for our last night together. Letâs go to the Industry.â
âOh, I donât know. I donât feel like hanging out at a club tonight. Maybe we could just rent some old movies and make popcorn.â
âYou have to be kidding.â Alex bounced to her feet. âWe have to go out in style. Who knows when weâll see each other again?â
âDonât make it sound so final. Weâre going to see each other every chance we get. Weâll write, callââ
âAnd die broke.â
Christian smiled as she pulled herself up and went into the kitchen. âI guess it will seem kind of strange.â
âCome on,â Alex pleaded, following behind her. âI need to do something to lift my spirits. And going clubbing is just what the doctor ordered.â
Christian turned and looked at her. From the bright gleam in Alexâs eyes, she doubted any further protest would do any good.
âCome on,â Alex continued to coax, while moving her body to imaginary music. âDonât you want to paint the city one last time with me?â
Shaking her head, Christian couldnât stop the smile that slid into place. âYou know, Iâm going to miss you when I leave. I donât know what Iâm going to do without you.â
âIn Amarillo, youâll miss everything. I still donât know why you would choose the country life over the city anyway butââ She held up her hands. âThatâs another story. Besides, Bobby is going to take real good care of you.â
Christian nodded. âI know. Thanks.â
âFor what?â
âFor always being there. Youâre the best friend a girl could ever have.â
Alexâs playful expression remained light. âYou ainât so bad yourself, kid.â
Christian shrugged, but was unable to prevent the sudden sadness that ebbed at her heart.
âHey,â Alex caught her frowning. âYouâre going to be fine.â She opened her arms and embraced her friend.
When they pulled back, they smiled and wiped their eyes dry.
âSo what do you say?â Alex asked. âDo you want to go out and party?â
Christian found herself warming to the idea. âYou got it.â
Â
The music at the Industry pumped the dance crowd. Everyone from the players to the player-haters came to get their groove on. Alex and Christian pushed their way through the throng of people, but they didnât get far before someone grabbed Christianâs arm and asked her to dance.
She politely turned the gentleman down with a smile, then continued through the crowd. They found a table close to the dance floor.
âWhy didnât you dance with him?â Alex asked, signaling for a waiter to come to their table.
âI donât know.â
âChris, we came here to have a good time. You have to loosen up.â
A voice spoke over her shoulder. âExcuse me.â
Christian looked up to see an attractive Blair Underwood look-alike. âWould you like to dance?â
âThanks, butââ
Alex kicked her under the table. âGo ahead, girl. Enjoy yourself,â she
