see us together?â He actually blushed. Under that tan skin, she saw a rosy hue burn into his cheeks. âAhhhh, there it is. I can almost see reality nipping at your ass.â
âI never thought you were a setup. Honest.â
No matter what he said, she worried about the possibility. There was no hiding that guilty look on his face. She saw the same one on her face in the mirror each morning since sheâd met him. âButâ¦?â
âI do have to be careful in public.â His hands eased up until his fingers dipped under her hair to massage her neck.
âAt places like your exâs wedding.â
The gentle kneading slowed. âYou do know everything, donât you?â
âThe entire island knows about that romance. You looked perfect together on the outside and then the unspeakable happened. Most people thought you got screwed in the process.â
Then his hands were gone. They hung at his sides. âThings happen.â
Katie wasnât letting go that easily. Wrapping her hands around his neck, she leaned in close. âCan I ask you something?â
âThe conversation canât go worse, so shoot,â he said with a sigh.
âSure it could.â
He rolled his eyes. âNow thereâs some bad news.â
âWhy did you go? Why put yourself through that?â She waited to feel his touch against her somewhereâanywhereâbut it never came. âI mean, Iâm assuming thatâs why you needed to hook up with me. You were upset at seeing Deana and then this woman you didnât know crossed your path. You needed to feel something and there I was.â
âIâm not sure if that explanation is less flattering to you or to me.â
âProbably me, but answer the question.â
He exhaled a long agonizing breath. âI needed to prove that I could.â
âHave sex?â
He didnât even blink. âStand there on that perfect day, in that incredible oceanfront spot, and watch Deana marry Josh.â
Since heâd given an honest answer, Katie finally broke her hold on him and let her fingers slide down to his shoulders, then to his waist. âThatâs a tough test of personal courage. What if you couldnât stand it?â
âI did.â His face didnât show any emotion.
âOr was the real point to make your head and your heart face it?â
âPretty much.â He grabbed her hands and pulled them away from his body. The only good thing was that he didnât let go. His warm fingers entangled with hers even as their bodies broke apart. âIâm not stuck on Deana. Iâm not using sex with you as some sort of antidote.â
âYou sure?â
âPositive.â He brought their bound hands to his lips and kissed her palm.
The sweet gesture sent Katieâs hormones racing. âYou really donât have a condom on you anywhere?â
He chuckled. âNo.â
âThatâs a shame.â
âIâm trying to show you that I can do something besides have sex.â Said the man as he licked his tongue over her skin.
âI hear youâre also pretty good in a courtroom.â
âWant to know why Iâm still standing here despite the tough questions? Honestly?â
âDo you know how to be anything else?â
âBecause I like being with you.â
âOn top of me.â
He treated her to a devastating smile. âI canât lie. That, too.â
With his mouth on her skin and those eyes watching her, she couldnât help but be lured in. Even felt a little disappointed by his determination to do something other than have sex with her. But it was hard to ignore the gesture. Pretty damn awesome in her book.
âWould you settle for a little necking and then another round of dishwashing?â she asked.
His mouth left her hand long enough for him to glance at the stacks of dishes around the sink. âLetâs
