waned—I could throw a boner just thinking about him—but our rare moments had become more than pounding fucks and sucking cock and getting off as quickly as possible. Shared intimacy wrapped us together, bonded us, brothers in arms who fought for opposite sides.
September was coming to a close and the heat of the day dipped as the night cooled. I’d found another hovel for this meet. Whether we went outside the walls or hid out in some deserted building in Alpha, danger and destruction and death always crept into our interludes. Tonight I only wanted to feel Hawke, his body against me, his gorgeous spirit swelling my chest with pride.
We sat together on another of my standard issue blankets. He reclined between my legs, his back against my chest. I kissed the nape of his neck, breathing in his clean scent. We’d just fucked, feeding the furious need to be together. Now we fed each other from his haul of fresh food. His arms looped around my thighs, hands tickling hairs, skimming up and down while I cut slices from a perfectly ripe apple. I glossed his lips with the crisp white flesh before letting him take a bite.
The potent combination of fruit and his lips glistening with juice was too much. I licked the shine away, tasting sweet apple and his pouty smile. “Ready for round two?”
“Not yet. I’m enjoyin’ how close you are to me. How open you feel.”
“I couldn’t be much more open after what you just did to me, gorgeous.” I hadn’t cleaned up after him. I wanted to feel him, keep his essence inside me, on me.
His soft chuckle shook his shoulders. Our weapons lay to the side, never touched around one another anymore. I’d turned off my D-P too, wanting silence and solitude, sanctuary no matter how dumpy and grungy this hellhole was.
His face turned to the side and I took in his handsome profile, the rugged features so different from what I was used to. Unique. Spirited. For tonight he was mine. I fed him the last bite, then wiped my fingers on my discarded shirt. Easing from behind Hawke, I lowered him down. As I leaned on my arm beside him, I rubbed his shoulders and caressed the deep and wide musculature of his chest. I watched as the last of his tension eased from his body.
I hadn’t said I love you since the night he showed up after Timmy’s death. That time it’d blurted been in the heat of the moment, when I was scared shitless. I’d never told Hawke how he affected me like an illegal drug to my inured system, dragging me from black and white to a life filled with his color.
“I love your hair, Hawke.” Twining the thin woven dreads in my fingers, I kissed his cheek.
That off kilter grin of Hawke’s turned my stomach upside-down. His hand trailed down the tight trail of hair from my belly button to pubic bush. “Oh yeah? I recall you sayin’ you thought I’d look more like a man if I shaved my mop top off.”
“I lied. There’s not a single goddamn unmanly thing about you.” I tucked my arm under his neck. Pretending we weren’t serious wasn’t cutting it for me anymore. This felt dangerous and scary. Thrilling. I couldn’t stop now. “I fucking love your eyes.” They were part steel and part mossy grass I used to play on when I was a kid. More silver than verdant when he was turned on, as he was now. More shimmering jade when he laughed…when I made him laugh.
His nipples contracted when my fingertips brushed over them, the hard pecs beneath flexing. I licked the cord of his neck up to his ear, breathing softly until chills rose on the strong column of his throat. “You’re a man. My man.”
I heard him swallow hard before his breath came out in a throaty moan. Dipping to sweep my lips across his, I continued down the middle of his chest. I licked along the deep-ridged muscles of his abs.
“What are you doin’ to me, Mayce?” His hands massaged my freshly shaved head and the feeling elicited the most erotic response I’d ever had to being handled in such a
