criminal who wanted to change his ways, but a bold-faced liar was not someone she wanted in her life. Her father had been like that. His abandonment still crushed her. She didnât want a repeat performance from another man she willingly gave her love and trust to.
Maybe it was already too late. Maybe that was exactly why sheâd been so heartbroken by his betrayal. Maybe she hadnât just been falling for himâsheâd already fallen.
Leo approached the table and paused when he saw Ryan. He stretched out his hand.
âLeo Barker,â he said. âAnd you are?â
âRyan Shephard.â Ryan shook his hand. âA friend of Emmaâs. A very good friend.â
âNot anymore,â Emma said tightly. âI believe I asked you to leave.â
âOh, come on, Em, donât be like that.â
She was feeling a multitude of emotions at the moment. A high level of exasperation, a lot of embarrassment, and there was still the unbidden desire that swirled within her being so near to Ryan. Sheâd never wanted to throttle someone and tear his clothes off and have sex with him at the same time. It was a strange combination.
And damn if she didnât find him amusing as well. Only Ryan would stroll in here, in the middle of her date, and claim that the character in her erotic novel was based on him.
Sheâd feel much more freedom to laugh it off if it wasnât one hundred percent true.
Leo frowned. âEmma, are you saying that you asked him to leave and he didnât?â
âYes,â she confirmed.
âIs this an ex of yours?â
âYou could say that,â Emma said. âBut not the way you think.â
Ryan didnât budge from his seat. âEmma and I have history. A lot of history. There was a time when we would practically finish each otherâs sentences, we were that close. A relationship like that doesnât just dissolve because of a few unfortunate misunderstandings.â
Emma rolled her eyes. âWe were only partners for a year. Letâs not get carried away.â
âNo, letâs. â Ryan grinned. âLook, Leo, no offense. You seem like a stand-up sort of fellow. But youâre just not Emmaâs type.â
âOh?â Leo eyed him. âAnd what is Emmaâs type?â
âMe,â he said bluntly.
She just stared across the table at him, temporarily speechless.
âIs that right?â Leo retorted. âThen itâs odd that sheâs out for dinner with me tonight and not you, isnât it?â
âWell, right now she thinks she hates me, but she doesnât. Iâve come back to town to see if I can prove that. She doesnât think she wants me here, but she really does. She just has to realize that.â
âI see,â Leo said. âPardon me for saying this, but that sounds like something a stalker would say. Someone who refuses to take no for an answer.â
There wasnât even a fraction of friendliness in his tone. Ryan gave him a stunned look.
âA stalker?â There was now an edge of anger to Ryanâs voice. âYou obviously donât know me because Iâd never harm a hair on Emmaâs head.â
âThen prove that and leave. Youâre clearly not wanted here.â
Ryan stood up and glared at him. âYou think so, huh?â
âYeah, I do.â
Emma sighed. âRyan, seriously. You need to go now.â
He looked at her and frowned. Disappointment slid behind his gaze. âFine. If thatâs what you want. But I will see you later.â
There was a woman standing right behind him. He turned to leave and Emma gasped as he slammed right into her.
But, wait. He didnât slam into her. He walked right through her as if he hadnât even seen her. As if she wasnât even there.
Ryan turned at the sound of Emmaâs gasp. âWhatâs wrong?â
She took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
