I madesure no oneâs fingers were anywhere but the mug handle before pouring the steaming kettle water in last.
âThanks, Lauren!â Lexa said.
âNow itâs an official tea party!â Khloe said. âLetâs grab the window seat and chat.â
Lexa and I followed Khloe. The window seat was tucked away from the center of the common room.
We sank into the black cushions, Khloe and I with our backs against the wall and Lexa cross-legged in the middle. The window looked out over the tennis court and outdoor pool. Two of Canterwoodâs many facilities that I couldnât wait to use.
âSo, when did you start at Canterwood?â I asked Lexa, gesturing to her with my mug.
âSixth grade,â she said. âSame year as Khlo. My parents sent me here for the academics, but I came to ride. â
âOh, yay! Another rider!â I grinned. âDid you bring your own horse?â
âOnly the love of my life! My mare, Honor,â Lexa said. âYou?â
âIâve got a mare, too. Her nameâs Whisper and I just got her over the summer, so weâre still getting used to each other. But I totally understand what you mean. Iâm already so in love with Whisper. I canât imaginehow Iâll feel after weâve had a whole year to bond.â
âWhisperâs such a pretty name,â Lexa said. âI bet our horses are all going to be friends.â
Khloe looked back and forth between us, smiling like she was keeping the juiciest secret ever kept!
âKK, you know you want to spill something,â Lexa said, beating me to it.
âYeah,â I encouraged. âI donât know all of your tell-tale âlooksâ yet . . . but even I can tell youâre dying to say something. So I agree with Lexaâspill away.â I smiled to encourage her further.
âItâs just . . . tea party love. My new roomie and my best bestie are bonding.â She fanned her eyes with her right hand, fingers splayed, pretending to fight off tears. âItâs a lovefest.â
Lexa rolled her eyes but we were both laughing. âAaand . . . we can bond even more if we have classes together,â Lexa teased. She half stood, pulling a folded piece of paper from the back pocket of her jeans. âSchedules?â
âMineâs in our room,â Khloe said.
âMine too,â I said.
Khloe set her mug on the table next to her. âI glanced at it, but I donât remember it at all. Iâll grab it. Lauren, want me to get yours?â
âMineâs on top of my desk,â I said. âThank you so much, Khlo.â
Khloe held up her hands in a stop-everything motion. âDid you just say Khlo ?â she asked.
Oh no . My first day and Iâd already called my roommate by a name she clearly hated.
âOmigod, Iâm soââ
âIâve been LTâd!â Khloe broke in joyously.
âWait,â I said, heart pounding. âYou liked when I called you that?â
Lexa broke in as Khloe nodded emphatically. âWay to traumatize your new roommate on day one.â Lexa shook her head.
âHow?â Khloe asked. âI got LTâdâshe gave me a nickname. Thatâs how we do!â
âBecause I like you,â Lexa said to me with a smile. âIâm going to give you a crash course in Khloe 101.â
âIâll take it!â I said. I made a come-here motion with my hands. âLay it on me.â
âFirst: never take her too seriously.â
âGot it,â I said.
âExceptâand this is rule number twoâif you see tears.â
âReally?â
âReally,â Lexa said. âKhloe never cries. So if she does, something is wrong. And last?â
âYes?â
âKhloe is the funnest person of anyone I know. You won the roommate lottery.â Lexa smiled kindly. âAnd from what I can tell, so did she. So have fun . This
