slowing as the trembling in her thighs increased. She eased
    her legs to the mattress.
“Shit. That wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Not what she’d wanted to hear, but then again she hadn’t
exactly expected a profession of love, either. She’d pretty
much forced him to have sex with her.

But he’d taken her virginity—a rather traumatic event for
her, and part of her resented the fact that all he could think
about was protocol and his partner’s warning glances.
She sighed—the sense of connection broken—and pushed
    against his chest. “Get off.”
“Get out” was what she meant. She needed privacy to regroup and pretend she wasn’t different somehow. She’d forced
him to fuck her. Damn near raped him.
And what about the bite? What the hell had that been
about? Even now, her gums itched and her teeth ached.
Rene’s body stiffened and he reared back. His face hardened and his eyebrows drew together in a fierce frown. “What
the fuck did you do to me? I couldn’t have stopped if a hurricane took the roof off mid stroke!”
She shook her head, unable to explain. What had felt powerful and natural moments before felt tarnished by the naked
fury in his glare. “I’m sorry, Rene,” she whispered.
He closed his eyes for a moment and drew a deep breath
that flared his nostrils. “Shit!” His hips lunged again, delivering a last shallow thrust.
“I couldn’t help it. I swear, I didn’t mean to push you so
far.” Liar! She’d wanted it all. Even now her pussy clenched
    around him.
A deep shudder shook his shoulders and belly. “I knew better.” When he looked at her again, his hard gaze softened a
little. “I’m sorry Natalie. I’m not handlin’ this like a gentleman.” He breathed deeply, settling on top of her, and brushed
her hair off her damp forehead. His gaze searched hers. “You
    don’t even know, do you?”
She didn’t like the regret twisting his lips. Guilt rose inside

That you’re a jerk?” she lashed back while trying to keep at
bay the tears burning the backs of her eyes.
    “That you’re a vampire.”
“A what?” She almost laughed—except what he said felt
right at a very elemental level.
“That bite. You drank blood. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty
sure that means you’re a vampire. Chessa would know.” He
sucked in another deep breath and sighed. “It’s why she
    warned me.”
“All these changes I’ve been going through—they meant
something? Like I’m becoming some kind of monster?”
“I don’t see Cheech as a monster,” he said softly. “She’s
pretty human. Bad tempered, grumpy—a helluva good partner.” He sighed. “She’s gonna have my ass when she gets here.
I wasn’t supposed to touch you. I’m thinkin’ I should have
kept my distance so I didn’t tempt you.”
She snorted, trying to keep things light when she was shaking inside. “You think you’re so irresistible?”
    “To you . . . yeah. I’m a walking blood bank. I’m sorry. I
didn’t mean to take it out on you. You’re the innocent one in
    all this.”
His eagerness to accept all the blame angered her. For a few
moments there, she’d been the one in control—she wasn’t
about to let him take that from her. “I bit you. Made you . . .
come inside me. How innocent does that make me?”
“I’m a grown man. I know better. I fucked your virginity
    all to hell.”
She couldn’t help the pout that pushed out her lower lip.
“That’s a lovely way of putting it.”

The smile lifting the corners of his lips was self-deriding
but tender, and warmed her to her toes. “You were amazin’.”
She’d wanted praise, she realized. Her body flowered
again—shocking her with the intensity of her renewed need.
“Since we’ve already passed the point of no return . . .”
