desperate, because he throws the ball directly into the hands of a Spartans defender, who runs a few yards up the field, but doesnât come close to scoring.
We run a couple of plays to take up the rest of the time on the clock, but the Spartans have victory on lock! Thatâs what Iâm talking âbout!
When the time runs out, the entire team rushes onto the field to celebrate their victory. My heart sinks as I watch a cheerleader throw her arms around Rickyâs neck and kiss him on the mouth!
Ugh! I canât believe sheâs putting her random germs all over him! And letâs talk about how even though he finally pushes her away, it is totally not fast enough. I see right now ... somebodyâs about to get hurt.
Letâs just hope itâs not me.

âL ook at your boy!â Hope exclaims.
I know sheâs talking about Ricky so I donât even want to look. Heâs spent this entire week being the celebrity of Longfellow High. In my opinion, heâs enjoying it too much, but basketball season is here and Ricky doesnât hoop. Soon heâll be old news and maybe we can get back to normal.
âIâm not looking at him,â I reply. âHeâs on some other stuff right now. It is so not a good look for him.â
Hope laughs. âThe cheerleaders think itâs a good look.â
Okay, why does it feel like Hope is having way too much fun with this? I know that sheâs still a little (or a lot) irritated that Ricky wasnât feeling her. Iâm glad to see Candy walking up, because the subject needs changing quick!
âHey, Candy. Cute outfit,â Hope says.
Candyâs smile beams in Hopeâs direction. âThank you!â
The state of Candyâs freshman fashion has been severely shattered by our parentsâ punishment. Any and all compliments on her limited apparel are greatly appreciated by Ms. Candy.
âDo you think Mama Gwen would be mad if I skipped the purity class tonight?â Candy asks.
âDo bears sleep in the woods?â
Hope sucks her teeth. âGia, why canât you ever just answer a question?â
âDonât hate me because Iâm witty,â I reply. âCandy, why are you trying to ditch the meeting tonight?â
âSpartans Singers auditions are after school, and I donât know how long Iâll be.â Candy twirls the end of her long, thick braid. The twirling is a sure sign that sheâs up to something. This girl stays messy!
âSpill it,â I say.
âSpill what?â Candy asks.
âThe reason youâre trying out for the Singers.â
âI like to sing.â
I twist my lips to one side. âAnd what else?â
âOh, Gia, you get on my nerves!â Hope fusses. âWhy does it have to be something else?â
I ignore Hope and lock eyes with Candy. âSpill it.â
âAll right! Chase asked me to try out.â
Hopeâs eyebrows rise in surprise. âSaschaâs boyfriend, Chase?â
âYes. Saschaâs Chase. Thatâs why I didnât want to tell yâall. I knew you would jump to conclusions.â
âWeâre not jumping to anything,â I reply. âBut when did you and Chase get to be cool?â
âOne of his boys was trying to get with Valerie about a month ago. We all went out for pizza a couple of times.â
Wow! Candy is sneaky as all get out. Sheâs not supposed to have any social outings without me, but sheâs been kicking it with seniors behind my back.
âIt sounds kind of shady,â Hope says.
Candy replies, âWell, itâs not, and I really hope that you two donât go running to Sascha, getting her all twisted about this.â
âIâm not saying anything, but you better watch your back,â I say. âSascha says sheâs in love with him, so trust that she will bring the drama.â
Candy rolls her eyes.
