âWhatever.â
Candy sashays down the hallway, so I guess sheâs off to the audition. Iâm about to continue my semi-rant to Hope, but sheâs clicking away on her new Sidekick. Can Gia get any technology? Yes, I did refer to myself in the third person right then, but I was having an out-of-body experience.
âWho are you texting?â I ask. âJames?â
Hope and Longfellow Spartan, James, hit it off while we were in Columbus for the championship. Theyâve been texting each other back and forth ever since. James is a cool dude. Heâs always full of jokes, and has a big linebacker cute kinda thing going on. He wouldnât be my first selection, but we are not talking about me. Weâre talking about Hope.
Hopeâs mouth hangs open, and her eyes widen as she looks at her screen. âOh, my goodness! I do not believe this!â
âWhat is it?â I ask, not appreciating the suspense one bit.
âI canât believe Valerie would be this mean!â
âWhat!â I demand.
âValerie posted some pictures of Susan Chiang on Facebook, and they are foul!â
I snatch Hopeâs phone. âWhat kind of pictures?â
Now my mouth is hanging open, too. The pictures look like they were taken in the shower. Most of Susanâs goodies are covered, but her face looks crazy seductive, âcause sheâs got her lips all pouted. When did Susan get to be one of those girls? Sheâs smart, nice, and everybody likes her.
Hope says, âValerie is pure evil. All this because she didnât get to be the Homecoming Queen?â
I rack my brain, trying to think of another reason why Valerie might hate Susan. Iâm coming up with nothing but blanks. Outside of her little shower-scene photo shoot, Susan is one of the nicest people I know.
âBut how do you think she got the pictures?â I ask. âDo you think she took them? She and Susan are nowhere near cool enough for that.â
Hope frowns. âThatâs a good point. Maybe she stole them.â
âCome on, Hope, Valerie is not a thief. Itâs not her style.â
Jewel and Kelani come running down the hall. âHave yâall seen?â Jewel asks.
âSusanâs pictures?â I ask.
âYes! I hear theyâre talking about taking her Homecoming queen crown away,â Kelani says.
Hope gasps. âNo way!â
âI totally heard Ms. Vaughn talking about it in the teachersâ lounge,â Kelani replies.
Iâm gonna need someone to explain to me how our teachers know whatâs posted on Facebook.
âMs. Vaughnâs got a Facebook profile?â I ask.
Kelani shrugs. âI donât know. But there are teachers on there perping as students. They are usually trying to get the scoop on cheaters and stuff.â
Hmmm ... This sounds suspicious to me, and no matter what anyone says, it doesnât sound like Valerie. Valerie is mean, but she would never do something that could be traced so easily back to herself. Sheâs all about making people miserable without getting in trouble.
âHas anyone seen or talked to Valerie?â I ask. âBecause it seems like everyone is just jumping to the conclusion that she did this.â
Kelaniâs thick eyebrows crumple into a frown. âI didnât know you and Valerie were tight like that, Gia. Youâre defending her?â
I shake my head. âNo. Not defending her, but I donât think we should accuse her without proof.â
Jewel snatches Hopeâs phone and shoves it beneath my nose. âThe proofâs right here! Itâs on her Facebook profile and it says she posted it. Case closed!â
Hope takes her phone back, shuts it off and puts it in her purse. âAs much as Valerie and I are mortal foes, I kind of agree with Gia. The last thing Valerie is trying to do is get in trouble and miss out on being prom queen. Itâs her last shot at a high school
