no idea how many times over the years I would think of you and smile. Think of all the promises we made to each other and how we would escape our lives.” He nodded and kissed her hand. “Thank you.”
“You’re very welcome. And there are times when I was trying to make a decision about a business deal and I’d find myself wondering what you’d do. Most of the time thinking of you and what you’d tell me was dead on. And when it wasn’t, it was damned close. You’re the best friend a guy could have.” He moved to the chair while she devoured the burger and fries. She knew that there was more that he wanted to say to her, but she was glad that he was waiting until she was finished eating. When the nurse came in while she was finishing up, she only smiled and took her blood pressure. Apparently, Samuel did have a lot of pull here.
“I have to talk to you.” He nodded at her after the meal was gone and the mess was cleaned up. “I have to get going. My boss is more than likely looking for me.”
She knew he might be , but she wasn’t really in any hurry to let him find her. There were a few things that had happened that night that she was still wondering about. Like how did all those extra men know to come out when she’d been talking to Sweeney? And why did he seem pissed that she’d gone to the house instead of standing down like he’d told her to do?
“I don’t think that’s such a good idea. I know that you’re good at your job . I’ve looked you up, but you’re supposed to be dead, not running around like a maniac trying to bring some asshole in. Rest for a while.” She started shaking her head. “Don’t do that. I need you to be around for a little while longer. My son will be born soon, and I want you here to meet him.”
“If they find me here, and I’ve no doubt that they will, your son might be hurt. Do you want that?” He stood up and started to pace. She waited to see if he’d tell her she was right. They both knew that she was, but he had to admit it or he’d never let her go. “Samuel?”
“I’m really a werelion, Thor. I know you probably don’t really believe me , but we’re all something extra. Something that can help protect you from this man.” She shook her head again, not believing he was still trying to tell her this. “Shall I show you?”
“Show me what? That you think you’re something more than a man? You don’t really believe that, do you? I mean come on, Samuel, this is me you’re talking to.” The room tightened a little, and she looked around. Something was— “Mother fuckballs.”
Samuel was gone. Not gone, she supposed, but no longer who she thought he should have been. When the large lion walked slowly to her bed, she moved back as far as she could and watched him. If he bit her right now, she’d be dead. Not from the bite but from the massive heart attack she was going to have.
“I told you so.” She looked at him when he touched her mind and spoke . “And the rest of us are what we said as well.”
“I’m dreaming.” He leapt up onto the bed and laid down at the foot. “Please don’t eat me. I believe you. Christ, I believe you.”
“I’m going to change back now. Will you be all right while I go out?” She nodded. “You’ll have to open the door for me.”
She started to stand up to let him out and then lock the door after him when Kaleb walked in. He stared at her, then at Samuel before he held the door open wide. Samuel jumped from the bed and to the floor in a fluid motion that had her nearly asking him to do it again. But fear of what she was seeing made her snap her mouth closed. She only just realized she wasn’t alone when she heard the click of the lock as Kaleb shut the door.
“I see he had to convince you.” She nodded , not sure what was really going on. “Are you all right?”
She nodded , then shook her head. “No, I’m not fucking all right. He just changed into a lion. Right here. What the fuck is up
