believe it.
âSo is Emily part of the Cupcake Club now?â I blurted out. âI mean, do we vote on these things or what?â
Everybody just kind of stared at me.
âWell,â said Mia, looking around, âEmily is a great helper, and we could sure use the help. Right?â She glanced at me.
âSure,â I said, not knowing what else to say. âIf her dad says itâs okay.â
Emily got up. âIâll go, um, ask him.â But I could tell she was leaving because she felt uncomfortable.
âWhat was that about?â Mia asked when Emily had gone.
âNothing,â I said. âIt was a normal question, thatâs all.â
âBut you sounded so angry,â Mia said. âAnd I think maybe you made Emily feel really bad.â
I sighed. âForget it.â
âSeriously, is something bothering you?â Mia pressed.
Normally, I would tell Mia anything. But I was still mad at her. It was like she was taking Emilyâs side.
âNo, Iâm fine,â I snapped. âLetâs just finish the meeting, okay?â
So we finished the meeting, and Emily came back in, and things went back to normal. Well, maybe on the outside they were normal. On the inside, I didnât feel normal at all.
CHAPTER 9
Thank Goodness for Mr. Cheddar!
A fter the meeting, Alexisâs mom picked up Alexis, Emma, and Mia.
âEmily and I should be getting back home,â Jeff said. I was relieved. Finally!
âKatie, we need to talk to you first,â Mom said. âEmilyâs mom is going to be out of the country all next week. Sheâs been going to Haiti to help out the people there.â
âOh, sheâs a doctor, right?â I said. âThatâs nice.â
âThe thing is, I have basketball tryouts after school most of this week,â Jeff said.
âSo I suggested Emily come here after school,â Mom chimed in. âWith you. Otherwise sheâd have to hang out in the gym for hours, waiting for Jeff.â
âYeah, and it can be pretty sweaty and smelly in there,â Jeff said with a laugh.
I let this sink in. âSo, Emily would be taking the bus back with me?â
Mom nodded. âThen you two could hang out until I get home, and Jeff will pick up Emily when heâs done.â
I couldnât believe it. After spending this whole weekend with Emily, I was going to be stuck with her for another week! But what was I supposed to say?
âSure, whatever,â I said.
âGreat!â Jeff said. âEmily will meet you by the bus tomorrow. How does that sound, Emily?â
âThatâs fine,â Emily said, but her voice sounded kind of small. She didnât seem thrilled either.
âThen itâs settled,â Mom said. She gave Jeff a kiss. âIâll check in with you tomorrow. Have a nice night, Emily.â
âThank you,â Emily said, and then she and Jeff left.
âWell, that was a lovely weekend, wasnât it?â Mom asked. âI know weâre filled up with chicken salad, so Iâll make something light for dinner. Maybe Iâll just heat up some soup.â
âSure, whatever,â I repeated, and then I wentup to my room. No one cared what I thought anymore anyway.
On Monday morning, I was in a pretty bad mood on the bus. Mia was talking to me about something Dan did, but I was barely listening.
Then I heard this squeaky voice.
âGood morning, Katie. Got any cheese?â
I looked up and saw a mouse puppet peering over the back of my chair.
âGeorge! What are you doing?â I asked, looking over the back of the seat.
âItâs my new act,â he said. âThis is my puppet, Mr. Cheddar.â He held up the puppet. âHow do you save a drowning mouse?â he asked in his squeaky voice.
âI donât know. How?â
âWith mouse-to-mouse resuscitation!â the puppet replied, and then George started
