âOf course,â I say. I would wait forever.
âHow do you ever come up with those wonderful story ideas?â says Anne Marie, gushing.
Antonia and I exchange a knowing look. Wow! I glide around the store, dizzy with happiness. I enter a conversation with two older ladies who are trying to decide which of Antoniaâs books to buy. I recommend Love Hath No Fury. They thank me.
âIâm a friend of the author,â I slip in, tilting my head. Iâm getting a handle on acting cool. I wander over to the register and talk to Marge. I tell her Iâm assisting Antonia.
âYouâll have to tell me what sheâs really like,â she says. âIâm a fan myself.â
âOf course,â I say, tilting, tilting, tilting.
âIs there something wrong with your neck?â she asks.
Perhaps my new look needs a little work.
Mr. Barrett buzzes around the store like a nervous fly. He slips copies of Antoniaâs books into customersâ hands and guides them to the book-signing line. Every few minutes, Antonia waves him over and whispers something in his ear. He brings her different pens, tissues, more bottled water.
I stand to the side and watch Antonia. I love the way she leans forward to talk to the customers like she really cares about them. Youâd never know from the way sheâs acting that she isnât enjoying this. Mr. Barrett looks thrilled with all the books heâs selling.
I imagine that I am Antonia and all these people are here to see me. âHow do you ever come up with such clever ideas for your stories?â theyâd ask over and over again.
âInspiration is everywhere,â I answer.
Someone bumps into me from behind.
âTalking to yourself again?â
I turn. Itâs Brendan.
THIRTEEN
Brendanâs eyes bore into me. Is he thinking about my running away yesterday? Say something. Anything. I canât. I look down at his shirt, which is covered with drawings of toads and says âToad-al Chaos.â
Beth steps between us, carrying a copy of Enraptured Thorns in My Heart. âIsnât this exciting? I love Antonia DeMarco.â She elbows me and smiles shyly. âMaybe you shouldnât mention this to your mother.â
This is too funny. âI wonât tell her,â I say.
Brendan starts to walk away, but Beth grabs his arm. âHey, you two,â she says. âLook at all these customers. Great opportunity to sell raffles!â
âI told you Iâm not going to sell them anymore,â he says. âIâm tired of annoying people with them.â
âNonsense. People love to buy raffle tickets. Right, Sarah?â
Brendan turns to me and our eyes lock. They really do. I thought that was just an expression, but I couldnât look away if I tried. I see the challenge in his stare: Stand up for us!
âBrendanâs right. Itâs a tough job and weâve been doing it a long time,â I say, not looking away from his eyes. âAsk some of the younger kids.â
Iâve never stood up to her before. Thereâs a hint of a smile on Brendanâs face.
âWell,â Beth says, looking uncomfortable. âI suppose I should get in line.â She walks away.
âYou see, strength in numbers works,â Brendan says.
âStrength in numbers,â I repeat. I fidget with the folder Iâm holding. âIâm sorry I ran away yesterday.â
âYou made me feel like a jerk,â he says.
âNo,â I say, looking up. âIt was stupid of me to run. Meeting Antonia made me nervous.â
âYeah, right.â He puts his hand in his pocket. âDonât worry.â He takes his hand out. He crosses his arms. âIt wonât happen again.â
âRight,â I say, trying to sound like I donât care. âOf course not.â
âOh, Sally.â Antonia DeMarco waves her hand. I look around for a Sally but
