a rousing discussion of Farragutâs naval prowess.
A few of those close to her quit talking to look around.
âI havenât seen him since he very dramatically died of his wounds,â Ramsay said. âI âskedaddledâ right after and rode out with Justin, before we rode back to take our fair share of the applause.â
âCliff?â Ashley asked.
Cliff shook his head. âNo, I was with the soldiers who came rushing in too late when Charles was being besieged by the enemy. I thought he just stood up and bowed when everyone was clapping. I donât remember seeing him when you and Frazier started talkingâ¦or when the band played.â
âHeâs probably outside somewhere. Iâll call his cell,â Ramsay said. He pulled out his phone and hit a number of buttons.
Ashley watched him. She realized the others had already turned away and were becoming involved in their conversations again.
Ramsay shook his head at her. âNo answer.â
Cliff cleared his throat. âNot to be disrespectful in any way, but maybe he met a girl andâgot lucky.â
âYeah for Charles!â Justin Binder said, lifting his glass. He was somewhat tipsyâif not drunkâAshley thought. Good thing he was staying on the property. The others were all still playacting; they were entrenched in the past.
They didnât want to look for someone they obviously believed was just off enjoying his own star turn. Butâ¦
âHe would have wanted to be here tonight,â Ashley said stubbornly. âHe was so thrilled to be taking the part of Marshall Donegal. Iâm going out to see if his car is still here.â
Ramsay lifted a hand. âSorry, donât bother, Ashley. He didnât drive. He came with me. I told him that I couldnât give him a ride back since I was going to stay at the house out here for a while, but he told me heâd hitch a ride back in with someone. Said he didnât have to be back to work until Tuesday morning and for me not to worry.â
âGentlemen, perhaps a search is in order,â Frazier said. âA Civil War parlor game of sorts.â
They all stared at him blankly.
âExactly,â Ashley said, relief coloring her tone. âFind the lost rebel. Beth will create a five-star private meal for a party of four, payable to the manâor womanâwho finds Charles!â
âI will?â Beth said. She looked at Ashley. âUm, it will beâsumptuous!â
âItâs a lot of property to cover,â Ramsay murmured.
âWe need to organize, then,â Griffin said. âIt will be fun. Yankees take the cemetery side, and rebels search out the bayou side.â
âIs that fair?â Griffin asked. âIf heâs still around, old Charlie would be by the cemetery, donât you think?â
âI pick scouting detail!â Justin said.
âYes! Letâs find Charles!â Toby said.
âIâll check out the area around the oaks out front,â Matty Martin offered. She was watching Ashley and seemed to realize that Ashley was seriously worried. âJohn, you can come with me. Itâs mighty dark out there, even with all the lights from the house and the property floodlights.â
âOf course, my dear,â John told her. âThey should have let women fight the war,â he muttered, following her out.
Hank laughed. âYeah, imagine, mud wrestling at its best.â
âHank!â Cliff admonished. âWar is always a serious affair.â
âWell, of course it is,â Griffin said. âWar is very seriousâbut weâre not at war. Weâre playing a game. Weâre looking for old Charles. Hey, Ashley, if no one winsâ¦â
âWell, at some point, weâll just all have dinner,â she told them.
âGreat!â Beth muttered to her. âNow I get to cook for all of them!â
âItâs good that
