from the popping camera flashes. âWhere did these people come from?â
âItâs called buzz, Toni.â Jane took her aside. âItâs how legends are born in Hollywood.â
Toni looked like she was going to lose it. âThisis ridiculous. I donât need all this attention going to their heads.â She pointed to Liberty and Gracie, who were blowing kisses to the crowd. âI need them to focus.â
Out of the corner of her eye, Toni caught a glimpse of her archnemesis, Justine Chase. She and the rest of the City Feet had come outside to see what all the commotion was about.
âOh, this is gonna be good!â Rochelle said, tugging Scarlettâs arm. âCanât you see the steam coming out of Mean Justineâs ears? She is really mad!â
âNice entrance,â Justine remarked. âVery subtle, Toni.â
âIt wasnât my idea.â Toni nodded at Jane.
âWas it your idea to pay the actors to cheer for your team?â Justine continued. âSo whatâs the going rate for fake fans?â
Mandy laughed. âThatâs so funny! The Divas have fake fans!â
Liberty stepped forward. âWe couldnât even pay people to be your fans,â she said. âThereâs not enough money in the world for it.â
âOh, nice one,â Rochelle said, applauding Liberty. The girl really had a gift for zingers!
âWeâll have tons of fans when we beat you,â Phoebe told them. She struck a pose for the paparazzi. âOver here, guys. You should be taking pics of the real stars of Electric Dance!â
The photographers suddenly rushed at City Feet. Addison, Regan, Mandy, and Phoebe smiled and waved.
âHey! Those are not your puppyrazzi!â Gracie protested.
âItâs paparazzi,â Scarlett corrected her. âAnd they can have them.â
âEnough!â Miss Toni snapped. âLetâs go inside and get to work.â
Toni had booked a small extra room for the girls to run their routines, but Jane had other plans.
âI got you the Crystal Ballroom.â She smiled. âItâs much bigger and has such a wonderful ambiance.â
Toni sighed. âThe room I booked would have done just fine, Jane,â she said. Then added through gritted teeth, âBut thanks.â
Rochelle was the first one up for practice. She still had no idea what she was wearing for her solo. Toni loved to keep her guessing.
âSo, am I dancing in this?â she asked, pointing to her red crop top and shorts. âOr you got something else for me?â
J. J. carried in a black wardrobe bag and unzipped it. âI thought this would do the trick.â He pulled out a black leather jacket, black leggings, and a colorful graphic T-shirtâjust like the outfit heâd worn the first day she met him. âYa like?â
âItâs so cool,â she said, trying the jacket on for size. âIt rocks.â
âThen itâs perfect,â Toni said. âNow letâs hope your dance is perfect as well.â
Rochelle ran through the moves over and over, with J. J. shouting out the counts. When she was done, she collapsed on the floor waiting for Toniâs feedback. Instead, there was silence.
âWell?â J. J. finally said. âSay something.â
âGood,â Toni replied. âItâs good.â
Rochelle sat up. âGood? Just good? Itâs awesome! Itâs crazy amazing! Itâs gonna knock those judges out of their seats!â
J. J. nodded. âCouldnât have said it better myself.â
But Toni refused to elaborate further. âLetâs just hope itâs good enough to beat City Feet.â
The Divas had never seen a dance competition quite like Electric Dance. The teams pulled out all the stops: there were lights, there were tricks, and there were over-the-top costumes.
âWhat is that supposed to be?â Bria asked as a
