incidents,â I said. I read through the list, then passed the phone to Ethan and Gabriel so they could get a sense of the feudâs scope and the creativity of the groupsâ reactions.
Humans werenât the only beings who could come up with inventive ways to torture each other. The blood-across-the-door threat was common, as were thefts of objects deemed important to each group. Not to mention the flat-out murder and assault. So many deaths, so much waste, and all because of a woman who might not have done anything wrong in the first place.
And thatâs the part I kept tripping over. âAre they making this too complicated?â
âWhatâs that?â Gabriel asked.
âI guess the feudâall of it. They started fighting because someone decided Fionaâs disappearance was part of a scheme, murder by the vampires or theft by the shifters.â I glanced at Ethan. âWeâre always talking about Occamâs razor, right? About how the simplest explanation is usually the right one. A scheme doesnât exactly fit that.â
âSo what does?â Damien asked, hands braced on the countertop.
I frowned. âI donât know. Christophe reportedly woke at dusk, and Fiona was gone. But she was a shifter. She could leave during the day. So whatâs the simplest explanation? She went out, meant to come back, but didnât for some reason. Got lost, got injured, got killed.â
âTheyâve had a century to think that through,â Ethan said. âSurely theyâd have looked everywhereâoverturned every stoneâto find her.â
âOr would they?â Damien asked. âIf they already hated each other, why bother proving the entire situation was an accident? Why not let it lie and use the lie against them?â
âThereâs also the possibility the present murder isnât feud related,â Gabriel said, and I nodded.
âTaran studied cartography, exploration,â I said. âMaybe he found something no one wanted publicized.â
Gabriel glanced at Ethan over my head. âSheâs coming along nicely.â
âAll according to plan,â Ethan said, wincing good-naturedly when I slugged him in the arm, since slugging Gabriel didnât seem the best option.
Gabriel took a final drink of his beer, sat it on the countertop. âIn that case, we should probably get to our respective trips. Iâd like Damien to go with you.â
âNow who wants a look at the Clan?â Ethan asked.
âOh, I donât deny it,â Gabe said, spinning the empty bottle on the countertop. âBut my primary concern is the McKenzie family. Theyâve shown very little respect for your House or mine. Iâm going to assume, until proven otherwise, that theyâre stubborn idiots, and take care of you as necessary.â
âIn that case, we appreciate the offer.â
âDo we have to ride in that orange disaster?â Damien asked.
âI call it the Orangesplosion,â I told him.
His lip curled with distaste.
âItâs a good vehicle,â Gabriel said. âAnd now itâs got four inflated tires.â
I gave him a wide grin. âYouâre really handy in vampire cult and ancient feud tire emergencies.â
âItâs a narrow field,â Gabriel said, rising from his stool and towering over me. âBut an important one. And watch the flirting. Ethanâs right there.â
âNo worries,â Ethan said, without a hint of irony. âIâve ruined her for other men.â
Given the fire in his eyes, I had no plans to test that theory.

Ethan took the wheel of Orangesplosion, and I took the passenger seat. Damien folded his long frame into the backseat.
âHowâs Boo?â I asked, when we climbed into the car.
Boo Garza was Damienâs pet, a kitten heâd saved during a previous magical misadventure.
âHeâs good,â Damien
