She went out with you? â
Connor played it cool. âThatâs right. And sheâs coming with us to the picnic Sunday.â
âWhat picnic?â CJ pretended not to remember, though Connor had told him more than once that they were going.
âOut at the Hopping H.â
âOh, great.â Meaning it wasnât. âForget it, okay? Iâm not going to any picnic out at Aunt Melanieâs ranch.â
âSuit yourself.â
CJ slanted him a suspicious look; Connor usually didnât give in that easily.
Connor got up and crossed to the door, turning back to deliver the zinger. âIâm sure Jerilyn will be sorry you couldnât make it.â He stepped over the threshold.
CJ stopped him before he shut the door behind him. âOkay, wait.â
Connor faced the room again. âItâs late. Turn off the game and go to sleep.â
âYouâre serious.â CJ squinted at him, as though trying to see inside his head. âJerilyn will be there.â
If she accepts Toriâs invitation. âIâm serious.â
âOkay, fine. I guess I donât mind going.â
Connor remembered Toriâs advice. âAnother thing.â
âWhat?â CJ asked in a guarded mumble.
âYou should ask Jerilyn to come over to the house. And any other new friends youâve made in town.â
âWhat for?â
âI donât know, just toâ¦hang out. Plus, Iâd like to get to know your friends a little.â
CJ frowned as he turned Connorâs suggestion over in his mind, no doubt looking for the catch. He found it. âGet to know them? Why? So you can ask them all kinds of questions?â
Connor suppressed a sigh. âNo. Because theyâre your friends, thatâs all. I would like to meet your friends.â
CJ thought about that for a minute. Apparently, he found Connorâs reasoning acceptable. He gave out a grudging, âIâll think about it.â
âGood. And go to bed.â
âOh, all right.â CJ grabbed the remote and turned off the flatscreen.
âGood night,â said Connor, as he pulled the door shut after him.
Faintly, he heard his son mutter, âNight.â
Â
In the morning, after breakfast, Connor shut the door to his study and called his sister. One of the college girls she had helping out at the ranch for the summer answered the phone.
âHi, Mr. McFarlane. Sheâs in the dining room, visiting with the guests.â
âHave her call me when she gets a moment.â
âHold on. She just came into the kitchenâ¦â
Then Melanie was on the line. âConnor. Hi.â
âYou sound breathless.â
âWeâve got a full house.â Even in the lagging economy, she was making the Hopping H pay. âAnd itâs Saturday breakfast, which is always hectic.â
âJust called to give you a heads-up. About tomorrow? I invited two more people. I hope thatâs okay.â
âNo problem. The more the merrier. Who? Do I know them?â
âTori Jones and Jerilyn Doolin.â
âAh,â Melanie said. It was a very knowing kind of sound. âWhat does ah mean?â
âNot a thing.â
âLiar.â
âWell, if you must know, I ran into Tori at the Tottering Teapot last Monday.â
âThe Tottering Teapot. Is that a restaurant?â
âThatâs right. On Main. We all love it.â
âWe?â
âItâs more of a womanâs kind of place, actually,â she explained. That news didnât surprise him in the least. âLots of fresh salads. About a thousand different varieties of tea.â
âI get the picture,â he said without a lot of enthusiasm. âSo you talked with Toriâ¦â
âI did. She mentioned she was going out with you. And Grant dropped by early this morning. You two were spotted in the Gallatin Room last night.â
