young woman with long brown hair. She stepped into the lobby. âWeâll be able to seat you in just a moment. Unless youâd like to go to the bar?â
âNeither, thanks. Iâve got a takeout order coming.âHe extended his hand toward her. âIâm Rafe. Marcosâs brother.â
Her brown eyes took on some sparkle. Her handshake was firm and direct. âOh! Youâre the one whoâs come home again. Iâm Wendy Fortune.â
âFortune?â
âI know, I know. The Fortunes are famous in Red Rock. Iâm from the Atlanta branch. Actually, I was exiled here.â She glanced past Rafe. âBut thatâs a long, boring story,â she said. âHereâs Marcos now. It was nice to meet you.â
âThanks. You, too.â
âAbout ten minutes for your order,â Marcos told his brother.
Rafe waited until Wendy was out of sight then said, âSheâs cute.â
âSpoiled. Youngest of six kids and been indulged all her life.â
Rafe heard something in Marcosâs voice that he couldnât identify. âIt sounds like you didnât want to hire her, so why did you?â
âI didnât have a say. Plus sheâs connected to our half-sister through marriage, you know.â He shrugged. âSheâs learning. Itâs not an easy job.â
âWell, sheâs attractive. Thatâll help.â
âI guess.â
Rafe grinned. âYou guess? I saw you watching her walk awayâand you werenât looking at her feet, hermano. â He held up both hands in surrender whilehis brother pretended to throw a punch. âDad finally told me heâs having a hard time coping.â
Marcos shifted gears just as easily. âHe actually admitted it? Good.â
The brothers talked until the order was ready, then Rafe made his way back to Melinaâs office. Through the open door to the conference room he saw Melina laughing with a tall man whose straight black hair was as long as hers. He spotted Rafe then whispered something to her.
Melina whirled around. âRafe! That was fast.â
Did she looked embarrassed? Flustered? Excited? He couldnât tell for sure. He only knew he felt pinpricks of jealousy stab him everywhere.
âThis is my partner,â she said. âQuanah Ruiz. Everyone calls him Q.â
Partner? Oh, business partner. Q reached for one of the bags of food and set it on the table, then shook Rafeâs hand.
âRafe Mendoza,â he said.
âI guessed as much. Melina was just telling me the great news about Elliot. Well done.â
âThanks. Thereâs plenty here for three if you want to join us. Chicken enchiladas, chile rellenos and Spanish rice. Taquitos and guac. Mexican chocolate cake,â he added, looking at Melina, who made a sound close to a whimper.
âFrom Red?â
âOf course. Q?â
Rafe wasnât sure whether he wanted the buffer ornot, but was surprisingly pleased when Q said he had other plans.
Melina started opening up the foil containers the moment Q left. Sheâd rounded up paper plates, plastic silverware and a couple of Cokes.
âI donât think Iâve ever heard the name Quanah,â he said.
âItâs Comancheâhis motherâs side. You can see it in his cheekbones, I think. For all his imposing height and that long hair, kids respond to him instantly. He tends to work mostly with the children, and I take on most of the adults, but sometimes a child takes a shine to me instead, or an adult to Q, so then we adapt. It keeps us both fresh that way, too.â
They sat down and started serving themselves and each other. âI noticed your grandfather is in a wheelchair,â Rafe said.
âHe doesnât use it all the time, just when heâd be on his feet for long periods. He needs hip replacement but wonât do the surgery. He says heâs too old.â
