that,â I said in a trembling voice. I knew they could see my hands shaking. Iâm such a bad liar.
âThereâs no mistake,â Gonzalez said. âIt was traced to your computer.â
âButââ
âCandy and her parents are very upset, as you can see,â Gonzalez said. âThey feel that you have slandered Candy and embarrassed her in a cruel and humiliating way. They are prepared to take legal action, Nate.â
âButâI . . .â
I couldnât speak. A hush fell over the room. They were waiting for me to say something.
To my surprise, Candy broke the silence. âI didnât think it was you,â she said. âI donât understand, Nate. Were you just showing off for Shark? Did he put you up to it?â
âN-no,â I stammered. I could feel my face burning.
Iâm going to have to take the heat, I decided. I canât squeal on Shark. I let him do it on my computer. Iâm partly to blame anyway.
âMaybe we should call your mother,â Gonzalez said.
âNo. Please,â I begged. âIâm really sorry. It was just a joke. It wasnât supposed to go that far. Iâm really sorry. Please donât call my mother. If thereâs anything I can do . . .â
âYouâve ruined my life, Nate!â Candy screamed.
Her dad grabbed her shoulder. âYour life isnât ruined,â he said. âIt was a cruel joke, Candy. But everyone will forget it in a day or two.â
Candy scowled at me. She fingered the jeweled pendant.
The lawyer leaned against the window ledge and scribbled on his pad.
âMy wife and I donât want to make a big deal of this,â Mr. Shutt told Gonzalez. âWe came in because Candy is very upset. But sheâll calm down.â
âNo, I wonât!â Candy cried, glaring at me. âI wonât! You donât care what happens to me. You donât care at all!â
âWe know Nateâs mother,â Mr. Shutt continued. âWe know sheâs gone through a hard time. We donât want Nate suspended or anything. We really want to end this and forget about it.â
I let out a sigh. I couldnât believe Candyâs dad was being so cool about this.
âMaybe if Nate apologizes to Candy,â Mr. Shutt said. âIn front of the whole school . . . ?â
âThatâs not enough!â Candy snapped.
âI appreciate your suggestion,â Gonzalez told Mr. Shutt. âAnd I appreciate your thoughtfulness toward Nate.â He turned to me. âYour joke was cruel and obscene, Nate.â
I hung my head. âI know. Iâm very sorry,â I said.
But I felt really good. I was getting off thehook. I wasnât going to be suspended. My mom wouldnât have to know.
âYes, Nate will apologize to Candy over the loudspeaker to the entire school,â Gonzalez told her parents. âNate, I want you to write a long and sincere apology.â
Candy gripped her pendant and scowled furiously at me. âThatâs not enough!â she shrieked again. âNot enough! Not enough!â

I stood next to the table, leaned in, and shouted over the jukebox. âSo Mr. Shutt was this totally cool guy. He got me off the hook with Gonzalez. It was unbelievable.â
Jamie shook her head. Lewisâs eyes were wide with shock. âI canât believe he did that,â he said. âWe all thought you were dead meat.â
I glanced to the back booth. Shark was there with Nikki and Galen. âI canât believe he did it either,â I said. âHow did such a good guy get such a loser for a daughter?â
Lewis took a long slug of his Coors. âNow what?â
I grinned. âShark owes me big time. He canât believe I took the heat for him. Now Candy hates me as much as she hates Shark.â
I glanced to the front. Ryland sat on a stoolwatching an old
