murdered.â
âThat other man, Mr. Soderberg, yeah. He fell down the stairs. That poor lady on three, she found him when she came home from work.â
âDid the police talk to you after that?â
Derek looked scared. âThe police? What they want to talk to me for?â
âJust to find out what happened.â
âWhat happened? That was a accident. He fell down the stairs.â
âSeems a little funny to me,â Defino said, screwing his face into a look of skepticism or even disbelief. âHe lived on two, didnât he?â
âYeah.â
âSo how come he fell down the stairs and landed on two? What would he have been doing one flight up from where he lived?â
âHe was changinâ a lightbulb is what he was doinâ.â
âChanging a lightbulb?â
âYeah. He was always complaininâ âbout those missinâ lightbulbs. Someone was cominâ in offa the street and stealinâ them. He kepâ sayinâ it was dangerous, you didnât have enough light.â
âHowâd he reach the ceiling?â
âHe had a little chair or somethinâ. I donât remember exactly what.â
âIsnât that your job, Derek? Changing lightbulbs?â
âItâs my job, sure, but I gotta see that lightbulbâs missinâ. I canât be everyplace at once.â He sounded very imposed upon, as though he were being asked to do more than his contract required.
âWhere were you when it happened, Derek?â Jane asked.
âMe? I was here. I was watchinâ TV.â
âWho was the lady who found him?â
âThat Miss Rawls. Nice lady. She about as scared as anyone I ever see. She called a ambulance. I heard it come and I went down to see what happened. They took him away.â
âWhat happened to Miss Rawls?â
âShe picked up and moved out. Left the same night.â
âYou know where she went?â Defino asked.
âYeah, she went to live with a friend. She give me the address.â
âDo you still have it?â
âNah. I threw it away. She come back a coupla days later, moved her stuff out. I never saw her again.â
âI heard you moved out, too,â Defino said.
âI was scared. Too many people die in that house. I went to stay with a friend but he threw me out after a few weeks. Mr. Stabile, he took me back. I been here ever since.â
âDid you know Mr. Soderberg?â Jane asked.
âI knew âem all. They all nice people. They nice to me at Christmas.â
âHow did Mr. Soderberg get along with the other people in the house?â
Derek shrugged. âI couldnât tell you that. I never heard no shoutinâ or nothinâ.â
âDo you remember Mrs. Best?â
âThe lady on one? I remember her.â
âDid she die in the house?â
âYeah.â
âWho found her body?â
Derek took a deep breath. âSomebody called. They didnât see her for a while so Mr. Stabile asked me to open the door.â
âThat must have been pretty awful,â Jane said.
âI never wanna do that again, I can tell you.â
âItâs been rough on you, Derek.â
âIt sure has.â
âHow are the people who live in that building now? You get along with them?â
He smiled, showing a couple of missing teeth. âI get along with everybody. Just ask Mr. Stabile.â

THEY WENT DOWN the block to the building where Quill had lived and died. All seven apartments were occupied now, and they turned down Derekâs offer to go inside the apartments of their choice. They had no warrants, and there wasnât much they could learn almost five years after the victimâs death. The file contained sketches of Quillâs apartment, but it was clear he had not been attacked there, nor had he died there.
As they walked up to the fourth floor, Derek prattled away about
