it that you are still a virgin?”
She laughs. “That is because I am scared of what my
father might do. He won’t go after girls. I am his little
princess. He used to be overly protective of me until Briar
died. Now he couldn’t get out of his own head. He listens
to everything his mother tells him. She is wicked mean
too. Grandma started this big fight between Mommy and
him on Christmas. He left us. Mommy went right back to
being depressed. Grandpa came to pack me up, taking me
to Cambridge since school was starting. Mommy packed
her stuff and left with no warning, no address and no
phone calls. Then she called me, and Daddy shipped me
down here to see her.”
I shake my head. “Olivia always said she was running
from her past. She said something odd one day to me.
That my brothers and I look like her husband. Is that
true?”
Katie throws her head back laughing. “Not really. He
is Italian American mix. He plays hockey and soccer too.
He sure can give you a run for your money even now
being older. He is very tall and built with black hair and
green eyes like you. Yes, there are similar features and
that is what Mommy was probably talking about.” She
picks up her phone looking at the screen, moving her
finger about. “Here is a photo of him.”
I take her phone and look at the photo. “He is a nice
looking man, Katie.”
She laughs. “Yeah, that is the only nice thing about
him. He is nice looking. When I was at my other school
during freshman year, he found out that I had a
boyfriend. He drove like a madman to come threaten
him. Mommy kept calling me, warning that if he found
out, he would kill the boy. My brother Briar told him
about the boy. When Daddy got to my dorm he forced
me to take him to the boy. Daddy pushed him around a
little and there went my chance at losing my virginity. The
boy would not even touch me. I tried a few times with
other guys, but I was too damn scared.”
I sit up. “No, Katie, it does not work that way. You
must wait until you’re married. You are not supposed to
just give yourself away like that.”
She laughs. “Come on, Pedro. Are you trying to tell
me that both you and your wife were virgins until you got
married?”
I nod my head. “Yes, of course.”
She starts laughing. “It figures. You are also the guy
who can’t move on either.”
I blink a few times. “Katie, I think I did move on.
What was last night?”
She stares at me. “You were drunk, Pedro, or you
would have never let me do that to you.”
I glance away from her stare. “No, I would have let
you regardless. You are completely beautiful.” I look back
at her eyes, knowing that I am in trouble now.
She gets up from the table and stands next to me.
She reaches down for my hand, pulling me up to my feet.
I stand there with my feet planted, not moving, as Katie
turns to look up at me.
“Let’s go to your bed, Pedro.”
I shake my head. “No, Katie. That was my wife’s
room.”
She comes closer to me. “Pedro, I told you that I was
sleeping over. Where did you want us to sleep? On that
table? I thought you said you were moving on, Pedro.”
She releases my hand, leaving me standing there as
she goes into my bedroom. I can’t do this. It feels wrong.
I try to picture my wife in my head, but I can’t. All I can
see is Katie’s face. Katie appears in the doorway only
wearing a black lace bra and black lace panty. Her skin is
so milky white and so smooth. I bite down on my bottom
lip, taking the sight of her in again. Last night was a blur
for me, but now this is real. I watch her as she moves her
long straight blonde hair over her shoulder.
She blinks at me seductively. “Pedro, are you going
to join me?”
I take two steps closer to her and stop again. She
turns and heads deeper into my bedroom. I can see her
sitting on my bed. I walk to the door frame leaning my
head against the wood as I peer at her from the corner of
my eyes.
“Katie, I honestly never thought I would see a
woman sitting on my bed
