forget about that creep who dumped on her. Something tells me nobody could do that better than you. Thereâs not a woman on the premises who doesnât swoon when you pass by.â
âIâm delighted to have your blessing,â he said dryly. âUnfortunately, it appears thatâs not the one I need.â
âItâs a start,â she retorted cheerfully. âGood luck.â
Duke took his time walking down the short executive suite corridor to Jordanâs office. If he had his way, they wouldnât have this conversation. Unfortunately, it appeared unlikely that he was going to get his way, which meant heâd better come up with some satisfactory answers for the questions Jordan was likely to ask.
In typical fashion, his boss didnât waste time on small talk. Duke was barely across the threshold when Jordan scowled at him and asked, âWhatâs going on between you and my daughter?â
Duke took his time responding. He deliberately sprawled in a chair opposite Jordan, hoping that the casual pose would communicate in a way that words could not that he wasnât going to be intimidated. Eventually, he shrugged. âNothing as far as I know. Have you asked her?â
Unfortunately, Jordan was too sharp a businessman to be fooled by Dukeâs tactic. âOh, please, donât give me that,â he shot right back. âI want a straight answer.â
Duke sat up a little straighter. He met Jordanâs gaze evenly. âI donât know what youâve heard, sir, but thatâs the truth. Weâve barely met. Sheâs made it plain sheâs not interested. What more is there to say?â
To Dukeâs astonishment, Jordan actually chuckled at that. âI donât suppose you see the contradiction in that, do you? According to your claim, you two hardly know each other, but already sheâs felt it necessary to tell you sheâs not interested. What do you suppose brought that on? You donât expect me to believe itâs how she opens every conversation with a man, do you?â
He flinched at the direct hit. âI suppose not.â
âCould it have something to do with you kissing her the other night?â
Duke stared. âHow the hell do you know about that?â
Jordan almost looked as if he felt sorry for him. âSon, you were on the front porch of my fatherâs house in the middle of a family picnic. The teenagers sneak around like budding operatives for the CIA. You canât keep a secret with this clan if you bury it in a cave a thousand miles away. How do you expect to keep anything quiet when youâre right in the thick of things?â
âA good point,â Duke conceded. âIâll have to be more careful next time.â
Jordan looked positively hopeful. âThen thereâs going to be a next time?â
Duke gave up on the evasions. âIf I have my way,â he admitted.
Jordan gave a little nod of satisfaction. âGood.â He studied Duke intently. âDaniâs had a rough time these past couple of years ever since she broke up with herfiancé, Rob Hilliard. If Iâd been more on top of things, maybe I could have done something to save her all that heartache.â He sighed with obvious regret, then looked directly into Dukeâs eyes. âIt wonât be easy getting her to trust you, you know that, donât you?â
âNothing worth having ever is.â
âYes, you of all people would know that, wouldnât you?â
âThen I have your approval to keep seeing her?â
âWould it matter if you didnât?â
Duke met Jordanâs gaze with a steady, unblinking look of his own. âNo, sir. With all due respect, it wouldnât.â
âThatâs what I thought,â he said, sounding pleased. âJust one thing, though.â
âYes?â
âHurt her and there wonât be a place on earth you can
