turning stench of the can. âIâm okay.â
âYouâre sure?â
âUnless I have to keep breathing this air down here.â
He pulled back a little, peering into her face with understandable wariness. âYouâre not still nauseous?â
She shook her head. âAnd I was really hoping last night was just a bad dream.â
âSo were my shoes.â
Wincing, she said, âIâm so sorry. Iâve never done that before.â
âIf it makes you feel any better, sushi doesnât agree with me, either.â
She smiled and his gaze followed the movements of her lips for one long moment before he let her go. Then he picked up a brown bag he must have dropped on the bench.
She recognized the slogan and her mouth watered in response. âDonuts,â she whispered reverently.
âGot an extra jelly roll in here.â He watched as she opened the bag and dug right in. âSo whatâs the nextâ¦?â When he trailed off, she glanced up, mouth full, hands covered in powered sugar. Embarrassed, she licked her lips and Kentâs eyes glazed over.
She nearly choked when she realized he was getting turned on by watching her eat. The power of it, the sheer delight in being able to render him speechless was amazing. Feeling a bit wicked now, she licked her lips again.
A strangled sort of sound escaped from deep in his throat.
She bit back her grin as renewed hope surged. âWhatâs the next what?â
He shook his head as if to clear it and looked purposely away from her mouth. âWhatâs the next adventure?â
You, she almost said. âSomething warm with no food.â
âGood. Something safe.â
âDidnât say that.â She swallowed her last bite and dusted off the sugar. âI was thinking rock climbing.â
âRock climbing,â he repeated. âYou ever been?â
âNope.â
He groaned. âHow did I know you were going to say that? Look Becca, you really have to know what youâre doing for that particular sport.â
âDonât worry, Iâm a quick learner.â
âI thought heights disagreed with you. Remember parasailing?â
âIt was the cold water that disagreed with me.â
He stared at her, then sighed. âAll right, fine. Be stubborn, thatâs nothing new. Rock climbing. Iâll pick you up at six. Weâll go to The Wall at Squaw Valley.â
â You know how to rock climb?â
He looked grumpy. âJust said so, didnât I?â
âActually, no you didnât.â
âYeah, I know what Iâm doing. Good thing too, because someone has to follow you around and make sure you donât kill yourself.â
Is that all he was doing? âIâll be fine,â she said stiffly. âI donât need a keeper.â
âItâs not for you, itâs for me.â He looked mightily unhappy. âI wonât be able to sleep unless I know you didnât hurt yourself.â
âWell gee, when you put it that way. Oh, please come.â
âSix oâclock,â he repeated. âDinner afterward.â
Her heart stopped. âDinner. As inâ¦a date?â
âYou wanted adventure.â His dark eyes were clear, full of an intriguing mix of annoyance and temper. âUnless you got it all out of your system?â
The way he was looking at her made her legs quiver. âOh no, not yet.â
âNo Dennis this time, and definitely I pick the restaurant.â
A date with Kent. It was her greatest fantasy. Okay, not quite her greatestâher greatest involved him and her, silk sheets and a moonlit bedroom, but this was close enough.
Suddenly he reached out and cupped her face. The touch startled her, warmed her. Aroused her. His thumb slid over her lower lip, arousing her all the more. âPowdered sugar,â he whispered. âYou still have a speckâ¦right here.â
