appeared on the scene and asked Adam why he had eaten fruit from the tree. He immediately blamed Eve!
Genesis 3:12-17
And the man said, the woman thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
To accept any of the above as a credible explanation about the actions of first human beings on earth we would also have to believe that a snake could talk!
Then Eve blamed the serpent:
And the Lord God said unto the woman what is this that thou hast done? And the woman said. The serpent beguiled me and I did eat.
God then began to hand out retribution to all concerned:
And the Lord God said unto the serpent, because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
And to Adam he said, because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree , of which I commanded thee, saying, thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
The suppression of women continues in many places throughout the Bible - Here are a few examples which are a direct result of the Garden of Eden experience and judgement and condemnation by God:
Timothy 2:11-14
Let the womem learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression
1 Corinthians 14:34-35
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience , as also saith the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in church.
Whilst I certainly do not accept the above in any way as good family values for today, currently most evangelical or fundamentalist Christians do not obey these rules for women of ‘keeping silent’ or ‘not teaching.’ There are many Christian women who have large ministries who teach and preach the Bible on television or are pastors of their own churches. Generally, only very ‘closed’ Christian cults adhere almost entirely to these scriptures and definitely treat their women as second class citizens.
Most of these same evangelical and fundamentalist Christians do, however, believe and accept that wives should be in submission to their own husbands, as Paul had taught in in his letters to the churches concerning family values and order in the home.
1 Corinthians 11:3
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Ephesians.5:22-25
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands , as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.
Colossians.3:18-21
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands , as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
