his tongue across her skin matched the electric snap of her hair. “I’ll make a note.”
He straightened, reaching into his back pocket. “You want to do the honors? You looked great today.”
“Thanks.” She put the foil between her teeth and ripped it open.
He pulled her jeans off. “You look great now, too.”
“Naked?” Tessa swallowed. That first weekend she hadn’t thought much about her body. What did it matter? It was a weekend fling. Who cared if she jiggled in some places and sagged in others? She wasn’t eighteen anymore. But all Brett’s recent girls were young, or were close, and the light in the hall was good enough he could see every imperfection.
“Hell, yeah. You”—he kissed her calf—“are a fine”—he kissed her hip— “looking woman.” He took her nipple between his lips.
Tessa stroked her hands across his back, blinking back tears. He was only saying that because she was available. Right now with her naked under him and holding an open condom, he was not going to say you’re an old hag, but I’ll take you . Tomorrow he might start wondering what he was even doing chasing after her. He didn’t need her anymore. He had his dream producer and the contracts were signed. All was right in his world. He could go back to the hot little things he normally fucked.
Shifting to her mouth, he kissed her with a satisfied sigh. “I have been thinking about you all afternoon. Dreaming about the sounds you make.” He got himself up on his knees so she could get the condom on. “You probably didn’t think of me at all. You were probably thinking about lawyer stuff. Rights and contracts and fun shit like that.”
“Yes, I was. All afternoon.” After she fixed the condom on, she stroked his length. “Copyright law is a huge turn on for me.”
“I bet it is. You gonna let me in, or do you wanna keep playing with me?”
Gaze locked on his, she stroked him again.
He caught her hand and lifted it over her head. “You know, I had all afternoon with Rosy Palm. If that’s what I wanted, I could have had it.” He slid into her. “This is what I wanted. Oh Jesus, woman. You really are fine.”
“Thank you.” The weight of his body pinned her to the floor. She gasped.
Brett opened his mouth over her ear, pouring heat into her. She clung to him, helpless in his riptide. The sweet thrill being with him tore at her. Cracked her open like an oyster. The desire to let him in, let him have her whole, almost swamped her.
But he wanted Suzi. Bright, pretty little Suzi who was what every man wanted. Sweet, innocent.
    Young.
    “Tessa,” Brett groaned.
She arched her hips, trying to meet his thrust, but the momentum was gone. So she faked it. She made the right noises and clenched the right muscles and made him believe she was satisfied. It wasn’t his fault she wasn’t. It was her own. She’d tried to pretend she could just continue as she had been. Having fun like a kid—with a kid. The boundary she really needed to set was a wall. With him on the other side.
Brett rested his head on her sweaty breast, catching his breath, and she ruffled his hair with her fingers. The only fair thing to do was end this. He was going to be gone recording for who knew how long with Jason. As much as six months. In that time, this little non-relationship would die a time-honored rock and roll death by distance.

Chapter 5

Brett rolled over and groped for her. Nothing. He opened one eye. Too early. Last night they had been all over this house, and he had the rug burns to prove it. She’d allowed him to stay the night, and he hadn’t stupidly left, which was a major victory. They’d lain in bed like a fucking married couple watching TV, which was on a timer and shut off on him about midnight. Didn’t matter. He’d just been using the glow to watch Tessa sleep. When the TV went off, he’d curled up around her. Normally, he didn’t fall asleep before four and woke up half a dozen times
