watched John ride away, wondering if this was how their weekend was

    “You look satisfied.”
    A smile spread across Sammy’s face. She was
satisfied, in more ways than one. When he’d disappeared earlier, it
was to get them some food from the barbeque, and he’d returned with
a plate piled high with chicken, corn on the cob, and baked beans.
They’d both been hungry and dove into the food like starving
teenagers, flushing it all down with ice-cold sweet tea.
    “I haven’t been this satisfied in a long
time.” She wasn’t just talking about the food. Would he get the
double meaning? Going by his sexy grin, he did.
    He pushed his chair back and got to his feet.
“Let’s go have that talk.”
    He sounded so solemn, and Sammy supposed it
was going to be a serious discussion. One that might decide how the
weekend was going to end between them. She watched him walk around
the table toward her. A little shiver rolled over her scantily clad
body when he stopped behind her and leaned in close enough for her
to feel his warm breath against her neck. He dropped his hands on
her shoulders in a firm caress.
    “Let’s go someplace where we’ll be more
comfortable.”
    Bed? It was the first thing that
popped into Sammy’s mind. Goodness, she was becoming a nympho!
    She rose to her feet and turned to face him.
They’d both showered before eating. She was wearing one of his
T-shirts, which stopped at the tops of her thighs and covered just
what it needed to. He was wearing a pair of sexy boxer briefs,
which showcased his powerful thighs. His nearness caused her
nipples to crest with instant awareness. John’s gaze dropped there,
and then roamed lazily up to her mouth.
    So sure he was going to kiss her, Sammy wet
her lips. Lord, his mouth is sensual! And very talented.
    “I’d love to kiss that sexy mouth of yours,
but we both know it never stops there. And I want to talk first. To
make sure we have no misunderstandings between us.”
    He took her by the hand and Sammy let him
lead her out to the small screened-in porch on the back of the
cabin. It was dark there, and the temperature a little cool, but it
felt good to her. She could barely make out a small round table and
some chairs. A shadow in the corner revealed there was possibly a
swing. John pushed her down onto one of the chairs before moving to
one opposite her.
    Sammy smiled. He really isn’t taking any
chances. Is he afraid of me? She took a deep breath. The
air was thick with the smells coming from the dying bonfire, cooked
food, and the scent of wild jasmine. Muted voices surrounded them.
A quick glance around the area showed a glimmer of lights in the
nearby cabins, and a few dim yellow lights on some of the
porches.
    “Here.”
    She started at John’s voice, and then she
reached for the glass he was handing her. There was a bottle on the
table she hadn’t noticed before.
    “Wine?” There was surprise in her tone. “I
thought you were a beer man.”
    “There are a lot of things you don’t know
about me, Sam.” She could tell he was taking a sip. “What do you
want out of our relationship?”
    “I didn’t know we were in a relationship.” God, why is my voice so shaky? Because I’m afraid.
    John released a deep breath. “You think this
is just a weekend fling?”
    God, she hoped not. Sammy didn’t know how to
respond to that. She took another sip of her wine, aware that she
was stalling for time.
    “We’re not kids anymore. Twenty years ago I
would have fucked you and walked away. I wanted you like hell, but
I was wild and arrogant. If I hadn’t left when I did, I would have
had you, and you being married to my brother wouldn’t have stopped
me.”
    Sammy knew he was speaking the truth. “I was
afraid of you.”
    “So you’ve said before. But you know what I
think? I think you were just as afraid of yourself back then.”
    “Maybe.”
