annoying.â
She leads him into a wood-paneled room. The walls are coated with law books and framed degrees. âThese are all your fatherâs?â asks Jimmy.
âYeah, he has a PhD in economics. Sometimes people call and ask for Dr. Sweetapple. Itâs totally weird.â She smiles.
âMy father has his PhD in Post Hole Digging.â
She laughs, then shuts the door. The floor is covered with photos, pages of stickers, colored paper, and scissors arranged around a large album. âIâm into scrapbooking,â she says. âIâm doing our entire senior year.â
He is about to kneel and look, but she takes his arm. âNo one sees it until itâs done, thatâs my rule.â She puckers her lips and kisses him. She smells like strawberry shower gel. âItâs not completely safe in here,â she breathes in his ear. âIâm not allowed to lock the door.â
They share a desk chair. He twists his body until sheâs half on his lap. Her laptop and schoolbooks are spread across the deskâs glass top. âI heard you made captain. Are you going to get it sewn on your jacket?â
âI havenât thought about it.â
âYou should. I mean, I wouldnât mind showing it off. I know a place that does embroidery. I could get it done and make it our one-month anniversary present.â
âIs it one month?â
âNext week.â She sprinkles his face with kisses, then gently kisses his mouth. âI guess I should get you something,â he says.
âYour jacket is enough.â Her cheeks are already red from his shaved face. His leg is falling asleep, but he doesnât care. He goes on kissing her, running his tongue across her chipped front tooth. Roxanne is so soft and delicious.
A door closes somewhere in the house. Roxanne freezes. âYou better pull up another chair.â
He sits on a low stool next to her.
âI was checking on my early applications,â she says, turning on her laptop.
âTo college?â
âYes, to college.â She laughs. âDid you apply?â
âNot yet.â
âYou want to do it?â
âNow?â
âYes, now. Iâll show you.â
He presses his lips on her neck. Having her help is like God coming down from heaven and showing him the secrets to the universe. Half of her classes are advanced placement, the other half are honors courses. Heâs always studied just to earn his B-minus average.
âWhatâs your dream college?â she asks.
âEast Stroudsburg,â he says.
âReally? Isnât that a Pennsylvania state school?â
âCoach Greco went there. Heâs writing me a recommendation letter. Itâs division one wrestling,â says Jimmy. âIf I can win like I did last season, Iâm in.â Saying these words out loud makes his stomach feel heavy.
âWhat major?â
âPhysical education.â
She smiles. âWhat are you going to do with a degree in physical education?â
âTeach phys ed and coach.â
âDo you know what a teacher makes? Donât you want nice things?â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âI donât know, like a house with four bedrooms.â
He wonders if sheâs seen his house. âI never thought about it.â
âIf youâre good at math you could major in accounting.â She says this like she has it all figured out. âUndergrad, my father majored in accounting.â
âToo bad I suck at math.â He wants to say that in his family being a gym teacher would be like being elected president.
âI guess all Iâm saying is, I wouldnât be able to major in phys ed.â She looks at the PhD degree. âBut forget it. We can do the entire application tonight and save it. Okay?â She finds the college site and clicks âApplications.â They go through all the biographical
