Charlotte said to Maeve.
Maeve reluctantly held them out. Her nails were painted with bright pink polish. Maeve had even glued a rhinestone to every nail, very Hollywood glam, except the polish was chipping around the edges. It was hard to maintain her beauty regime and do her homework, too.
âNow I need to see everyone elseâs hands,â Charlotte said, carefully examining each pair, turning them over.
âAvery, youâre the best match for her,â Charlotte said. âYour hands are the same size.â
Avery pulled back her hands in horror. âI have no nails,â she said.
âFixable,â Charlotte said. âNail polish will do the trick.â
âWhat are you up to?â Katani asked.
âIâll tell you what sheâs not up to,â Avery said. âSheâs not painting my nails!â
âI donât understand,â Isabel said to Charlotte. âWhat kind of trick is this? It sounds creepy!â
âOh,â Charlotte said gleefully. âWe build this little thing. Separate the box into two pieces, and voilà , it looks as if Maeve has been separated from her hands. A few dramatic noises, Maeveâs Academy Award performance, and the audience will believe it.â
Now that it involved acting ability, Maeve was starting to get interested. âI can scream really well,â she said, and she proceeded to give them a preview.
âFabulous,â Katani added with sarcasm. âI donât think you have to do that again until the talent show.â
Maeve stuck her tongue out playfully at Katani.
âWhat about you?â Charlotte turned to Avery.
âDo I have a choice?â Avery asked.
âNot really,â Charlotte laughed.
âIs the Marty trick still in the show?â Avery asked.
âYes,â Charlotte said.
âAnd I want to do a trick with the guinea pigs, too,â Avery said, realizing she had some leverage.
âWhat trick?â This was the first Charlotte had heard of any guinea pig trick.
âI donât know yet. Iâll think of something,â Avery said.
âNow youâre pushing it,â Charlotte said.
âThatâs my final offer,â Avery said, putting her hands on her hips. âItâs either the guinea pigs orâ¦â
âOkay,â Charlotte said. âOkay, okay, okay. Are we all in?â
âIâm in, but this trick is kind of creepy. I donât know if anyoneâs gonna let us do it,â Isabel said doubtfully.
T ROUBLE WITH M OVIES
The girls worked until almost dinnertime. By the time they were finished, they had five tricks lined up, including one with the guinea pigs, newly renamed Siegfried and Roy. Avery was delighted. Katani decided she wanted to make an endless scarf that Isabel could pull all the way across the stage. Everyone liked the idea. âIâm not sure yet what material to make it out of,â she said.
âSomething diaphanous,â Maeve suggested.
âWhat does that mean?â Isabel asked.
âYou know, sheer, transparentâ¦something that seems to glow with its own light,â Maeve said dreamily, getting carried away with a vision of herself dancing across the stage.
âGood word,â Isabel said. âYou must read a lot of books.â
âEveryzing I know Iâve learned from ze movies,â she said in her best French accent. âParticularly the old ones,â Maeve added in her own voice. âMy dad and I love to watch them together. Especially old Katharine Hepburn films.â
Dramatically putting her hand to her forehead, she launched into her best Katharine Hepburn imitation: âThe calla lilies are in bloom againâ¦â
Katani smiled.
Isabel looked at her blankly.
âPlease donât tell me you havenât seen any Katharine Hepburn movies,â Maeve said.
âI saw My Fair Lady ,â Isabel said hopefully.
