we’re back on the bike.”
She nods her head, readying herself as their seat slowly comes to a stop at the bottom and the long haired man unlocks their metal bar before lifting it over their heads.
Jason nods at him, smiling politely as he looks over his shoulder, keeping his eyes on the backs of the Serpentines jackets as Lily steps off the ride.
“Come on.” He says, entangling their hands as he pulls her towards the entrance to the fair park, forgoing their return stamps as they hurry into the parking lot.
“Get on, I’ll take you home.” He says, quickly straddling his bike and turning over the engine.
She slides herself on, her heart pounding in her ears as he quickly rides away, passing a group of lonely, waiting Harley’s at the end of the lot.
Lily holds on tightly as Jason roughly rides over the ruts and holes on street as they make their way to her driveway.
“Will you come inside?” She asks as she slips herself off his bike, trailing her hand down the arm of his jacket as he shakes his head slightly from side to side.
“Lily, I’m sorry, babe…” He whispers to her as he reaches for her chin. “I gotta get out of town for a couple days to try and throw them off for a little while.”
“You’ll call me?” She asks, stepping back as he begins to back up his bike.
“Of course I will.” He replies, winking at her, her mouth slowly upturning into a gentle smirk.
“Be careful!” She whispers, waving to him as she watches him disappear, the sounds of his rumbling engine getting further and further away. “Because I think I love you…”
Chapter 9
Lily stops at the top of her stairs, huffing quietly as she rests the plastic laundry basket against her hip to wipe her forehead before flicking the switch beside her to turn off the basement lights.
She groans as she takes the last step, entering her kitchen before making her way down the hallway to her bedroom.
Lily tosses the basket onto her bed before following it, sitting down and curling her legs under her as she pulls it onto its side and drags her fresh laundry out of the cage.
She hums softly to herself as she picks up a face cloth and folds it over in her hands before placing it down beside her and picking up another.
“Oh, that one’s for the kitchen…” She whispers to herself as she places it in its own pile before turning her head towards her ringing cellphone on her bedside table.
She lays down, rolling onto her side before stretching up to reach for her phone. She lets out a small, throat clearing cough, not recognizing the number calling as she presses the button to answer it before bringing the phone to her ear.
“Hello?” She says, sitting up to catch her breath.
“Hi, baby girl…” She hears on the other line as her heart flutters in her chest and her lips curl up into a smile.
“Jason…” She whispers back to him, trying her best to hold in a giggle as she lets herself fall back down to the bed. “How nice of you to call. And here I was worried that you forgot all about little old me…”
“Yeah…” He chuckles, snorting into the phone. “And I almost did in the last, what, fourteen hours since our last call?”
“Well, you never know.” She says as she rolls onto her stomach.
“How was it out there today?” He asks.
“I’m all out.” She giggles, looking over at her bag before reaching to it and sinking her had into the emptiness. “I told you I would be great at this, didn’t I?”
“Oh, you did?” He jokes. “I seem to recall a girl who looks just like you scaring all my customers away just last week…”
“People love me.” She says, holding out her hand to look at her golden ring.
“Yeah, you are loveable.” He whispers to her, lowering his voice to speak into the receiver.
She smiles, but her sparkling eyes turn dark as
