especially not any woman. He
would probably be gone after four minutes, not even waiting the full five.
I would just go
back there to tell him that I couldn’t stay, that if he thought I wanted
anything extra with him that he had another thing coming. I didn’t want
anything of the sort, and if it wasn’t restaurant business he should just be on
his way.
Yeah, that was a
good idea. That was exactly what I would do.
I kept reassuring
myself how I was not going to hook up with him for the entire walk back there,
repeating it over and over again. Reminding myself that I was not that kind of
girl, I wasn’t a hoe. And sleeping with Link Ford twice in two days when I
barely knew him was for sure a hoe thing to do. Especially when it was at my
place of employment, he did own the establishment, but it was still suspect as
fuck.
He was waiting for
me with the same sure smirk I’d already become so used to in the past few days.
He was leaning against the desk in the back office, muscular arms folded over
his chest.
I stood in the
doorway for a second, not able to find any words.
“Shut the door.”
I shook my head.
“I just came back here to tell you that I will not be staying.”
“Shut the door,”
he said again, more demanding this time; like he was annoyed at me for not
listening to him the first time. A flash of him smacking Jay over the head with
his gun for not listening to him yesterday flashed through my mind. Blood had
been shooting everywhere afterward.
I shut the door
behind me, not wanting to have to be told a third time.
“I’m working,” I
told him.
Link shrugged,
taking a few steps closer to me. “I told them I had to go over your yearly
review with you so to not bother us.” He ran one of his large hands back and
forth over the sleeve of his jacket, letting his eyes run up and down my body.
“Oh,” I said. “I
didn’t even know we had a yearly review.”
Link laughed
loudly, still inching his body closer and closer to me. “We don’t.”
I took a step away
from him. “So what did you think would happen? That I would just come back here
and you could have your way with me? Or something? Because I’m not that kind of
girl!”
Link smirked and I
knew he was thinking about what had happened between us yesterday. He raised
his eyebrows at me, challenging my words. “Has anyone ever told you how sexy
you are when you get all worked up and nervous?” He titled his head to the
side, getting a better view of me.
I backed away,
trying not to stutter. “Yesterday was different, I was going through a life or
death situation. I wasn’t in my right state of mind! I was making crazy
decisions!” I was sounding like an idiot now with my crazy rant but I didn’t
care. He was right; he made me fucking nervous.
“Right, life or
death,” he nodded like he was actually taking what I was saying serious but I
could see the amusement in his eyes as he took my words in and processed them.
Ugh, could he be
any more sure of himself?
And anymore
annoying?
And anymore sexy?
Shut up, Lacey.
He was bad news,
very bad news.
I tried to remind
myself.
“That’s right life
or death. So that’s why what happened…happened. So for you to think you can
just show up here at nine in the morning expecting a repeat is really… really…”
“Really what?” he
demanded, raising his eyebrows.
“Fucked up!”
Link smiled in
satisfaction, loving my attitude, or maybe he just loved how uncomfortable he
was making me, it was tough to tell. “Maybe you’re the one who’s fucked up.” He
took a few steps toward me, making him even closer to me than he was before.
I was practically
pushed up against the door now. “How am I the fucked up one?”
“You just assume
that I’m here to hit it? What kind of guy do you think I am? Maybe I just
wanted to talk.” He moved closer to me, shrugging out of his jacket and letting
it fall to the floor.
“Did you… did you
just want to talk?”
Link looked
