run off the road by a goddamned van.
“We almost got rammed the fuck off the road!”
When he heard Chris scream, his heart seized. He ran into the house to find her standing stock still a few steps from the door. Everything had been trashed in the time they’d been gone. Knives had been plunged into her leather sofas, and stuff had been strewn all over the place. Red spray paint had been used to leave her a message on her wall: This isn’t a warning. It’s a preview.
Curling an arm protectively over her, he lifted the phone back to his ear and guided her out the door. “We’re going to my place; her house was trashed. Send people to take care of the cleanup.”

Chapter Nine

Chris stared at the large gate leading to Drex’s home. More security than she’d ever seen before crowded around the entrance. There was no reason for all these threats against her. She wasn’t going to write about anyone in particular, not to mention she didn’t remember recognizing anyone that night.
Inside Drex’s study, she sat on a sofa and racked her brain trying to figure out the mystery. Who the hell wanted her out of the way?
“Are you OK?” Drex’s soft words calmed the strain in her stomach. He brought her a tumbler with whiskey, and she took one long gulp, needing to halt the anxiety fluttering in her chest.
“Yeah. I just don’t get this. Who the hell is doing this? I mean I don’t remember any particular person from that night.” The only man she’d been focused on had been Drex. After she’d noticed him, everyone else had taken a backseat in her mind.
“Are you sure? Think back. There might be something you might have skipped over that could be really important now.”
He sat next to her on the sofa and pulled her on to his lap. The sandals she wore dropped to the floor. She bent her legs until she was cradled in his arms. He rubbed up and down her spine in soothing caresses. Dropping her head on to the curve of his shoulder, she continued to think hard, but nothing out of the ordinary came to mind.
“No. I don’t get it. This article isn’t a trashy tell on anyone. I’m very particular about what I write. I don’t really care about anyone’s sex life or what people do on their off time. All I want is to give hints over the sensual aspect and information on the fact it’s all for charity.”
“I know, baby. We’ll have to wait until it’s out to see if whoever it is realizes you’re not a threat to them.”
Warmth enveloped her, and his dark, sexy scent drifted up her nose. Hunger and arousal shot through her. She wanted him. Always wanted him, it seemed. Desire kindled the flame in her blood. She licked over the quickened pulse on his throat. A flick of her tongue on his skin and she needed more. He groaned and tightened his arms around her. The ringing of a phone interrupted them from going any further.
“I need to take this. I’ll be back in a few moments.” He clicked on his phone and started talking business as he walked out the door.
She had to get out and think. There was too much going on, too soon. Heading toward the back of his house, she went out and headed to the pond. It was one of her favorite places on his estate. Warm air cuddled her skin as she sat on the grass and stared at the water. Her thoughts strayed to her feelings for Drex. Cautious joy unfurled inside her. There was no need to question it too much. She loved him.
When she’d seen how happy her parents had been, she’d always said she’d enjoy her life as they had. She wanted that happiness for herself.
In her case, that meant a man she loved and who loved her back. It wasn’t looking very likely, though. She wanted Drex. He was known for having a deadline on relationships. Nothing went past three months. She’d enjoy her time with him for as long as it lasted. No regrets. But even as she thought it, pricks of pain hit her heart. Maybe it was best to stop this now before it got any harder on her
