up this morning I forgot she was there and decided to catch a little more sleep. Like, what am I going to learn in government?â
âYouâre a funny girl.â
âWhen I remembered, I went into the guest room and it was empty.â
âYou said the only guy not afraid of her dad is Stack?â
âYeah, he says heâs taken Mary for coffee a couple of times. Walks right up to the door and starts a conversation. Mr. Wells treats him different than other boys. At least thatâs what Arney says.â
âArneyâs a politician,â Logs says.
âArneyâs fearless,â Hannah says back. âOr crazy.â
As she says it, Arney walks up. âHey, Hannah, how strange is this?â
âStranger than you think,â Hannah says. âI was with Mary last night.â
Arney looks bewildered. âLast night? Thatâs not . . .â He starts to walk away, turns back. âWhen?â
âNear midnight,â Hannah says. âI almost ran her down. She was way zoned out, walking down the middle of the road. . . .â Hannah finishes her story much as she gave it to Logs.
âWow, that doesnât sound like Mary. You took her home?â He looks at students coming out of the woods. âSo how does all this happen?â
âMy home, not hers,â Hannah says. âWhatâs the matter with you, Arney? You think Iâm making this up?â
âNo, no,â he says, shaking his head. âJust doesnât sound like Mary, thatâs all.â
âWell, she may very well be missing from her place for two days,â Hannah says, âbut she isnât gone . And like I said, she was whack.â
âWhat did she say?â
âThat she didnât want to go home.â
âWhy would she not want to go home?â
âSheâs Mary Wells, Arney . Would you want to go home if your dad was Mr. Wells? I donât even know her dadâs first name, unless itâs Mister. â
âHis name is Victor,â Arney says. âAnd heâs not such a bad guy if you donât let him intimidate you. Shoot, Iâve been out with Mary.â
âYou guys have been out out?â
âA few times,â Arney says. âA movie, whatever.â
âA movie,â Hannah says. â Little Mermaid ?â
Arney shakes his head. âHer situation isnât as bad as everybody thinks. Most of that stuff is rumor.â
âYeah, right.â
Arney turns to Mr. Logs. âSo we calling this off?â
âOfficer Rankin is on the phone with Mr. Wells now,â Logs says. âTheyâll give us direction soon.â He turns to Hannah. âCan you remember anything else?â
âNo. I should have asked more questions, I guess.â She looks up to see Arney next to the police car, talking with Officer Rankin. She laughs. âArney has to be in the middle of everything .â
A Lexus pulls into the parking lot. The driverâs-side door flies open and Victor Wells steps out. Officer Rankin approaches him from the patrol car and they exchange quick words, then approach Hannah.
Rankin says, âVictor Wells, this is . . . Iâm sorry, young lady, I didnât get your name.â
âHannah. Murphy.â
âNice to meet you,â Mr. Wells says. He doesnât extend his hand. âOfficer Rankin here says you claim to have been with my daughter last night. Might I ask why it took you so long to say so?â
Wells is a tall man, well over six feet, and athletic. Hannah stiffens. âI donât claim to have been with her. I was with her.â
Wells looks Hannah up and down. âWhat time was that?â
Rankin says, âI told you, sir, aroundââ
Wells holds up a hand. âI want to hear it from the young lady.â
âI found her around midnight. She was walking on the road.â
âAnd what were you doing out at
