on for her.
âSomething else,â Windy said. âYou brought back a boatload of artifacts, right? From the Night Angel. â
âWe salvaged a few items, yes.â
âI was thinking that we might provide you with some publicity. Help you sell the merchandise.â
âWhat did you have in mind, Windy?â
âWhy not put the artifacts temporarily in our hands? We could create an exhibition at the museum. Put everything on display for, say, a month. I suspect that sort of event would enhance their value considerably.â
âWe might consider making some of them available,â I told her. âWhat do we get in return?â
âI beg your pardon?â
âYou get a Shenji exhibition. What do we get?â
âChase, youâre going to get a ton of museum exposure.â
âI think Survey comes out way ahead on that arrangement.â
âOkay. Iâll tell you what. Let us have the artifacts, and Iâll let your boss in on something.â
âNothing up this sleeve,â I said.
âHear me out.â
âWhatâs the something?â
âWeâre approaching the sixtieth anniversary of the loss of the Polaris. â
I tossed the towel into a hamper and pulled on a robe. âYou alone, Windy?â
âYes.â
I went out to the living room and switched over to visual. She was sitting behind her desk.
âMust be nice to be able to keep those kinds of hours,â she said.
âIâm paid for what I know.â
âOf course. Iâve always thought that.â
âWhatâs the something youâre prepared to offer?â
âNext week, to mark the anniversary, several books are being released. A major studio production has been put together, and one of the networks even has a psychic whoâs going around explaining what happened.â
âAboard the Polaris? â
âYes.â
âWhatâs he say? The psychic?â
âGhosts got âem.â
âWhy am I not surprised to hear that?â
âIâm not kidding. Ghosts. More or less. Some sort of supernatural fog. Goes right through the hull.â
âOkay.â
âThe guyâs good. Heâs got a track record.â
âIâm sure.â
âThe point is that thereâll be a lot going on about the Polaris over the next couple of weeks. Weâre doing a banquet, inviting some VIPs, andweâve been holding off on the dedication so we could do everything at once.â
âThe dedication?â
âA new wing. For the Polaris. â
âYouâre just getting around to it now?â
She laughed. âYouâll have to ask somebody else about that, Chase. Iâve only been here a few years. But, off the record, I suspect it was always a bit too spooky for Survey. Seven people vanish off a ship? It was a downbeat story for a long time. I donât think they wanted to remind anybody. Now itâs mostly legend. You know what I mean? Anyhow, weâre going to make it into a two-week-long extravaganza. Now what I think youâll be interested in is that weâre going to sell off some Polaris artifacts. At auction.â
âArtifacts?â That was a surprise. âI didnât know you had any.â
âThey were stored at the time of the event. Theyâre personal items mostly, slates, pressure suits, pens, mugs, you name it. And some gear, but not much.â
âWhy? I mean, whyâd they go into storage?â
âThere were a lot of investigations. When the big one was done, the Trendel Commission, they sold the ship and probably forgot about the stuff. Or maybe somebody thought itâd be worth hanging on to.â
Artifacts from the Polaris. Theyâd be worth a fortune.
âAnyway, weâll be issuing invitations to the banquet for you and Alex.â
I couldnât help a wide smile. âYou get access to the Night Angel artifacts, and
