conversations with me. It could be nothing, although meeting someone’s parents was supposed to be one of the biggest deals in a relationship. Maybe, he was finally seeing me as more than just a project and wanted to show me off to the people that raised him. It was a good sign that things were progressing in the right direction. I wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip through my fingers.
I walked out of the office at 7 PM and found Ethan standing by his car with a big smile on his face. I could never get tired of seeing him smile.
“Sorry, but that last fitting took a little longer than I expected it to. Now, what is this email that I got from you saying that you wanted me to join you for the weekend to meet your parents? I didn’t even know that you had parents.”
He laughed and said, “Where did you think I came from, under a rock?”
“No, I figured that you had parents but you never mentioned them before. I was starting to wonder that maybe they had passed on and you didn’t want to talk about it.”
“No, it’s nothing like that, I just didn’t see the need to mention them before, considering the fact that we sort of just met and I rarely bring women to meet my parents. I just need to go up there and collect some artwork that my father had purchased on my behalf and thought I would make a weekend out of it. They have been bugging me to visit for the last year. Since I don’t want to go alone, I thought that I would ask the one person that I could trust and actually enjoy being with.”
“Okay, if I decide to say yes and go with you, just what will the sleeping arrangements be under their roof?”
“I…I…I” He looked so cute stammering over his words that I had to put him out of his misery.
“Don’t look so worried, of course we can sleep in the same room, I was just teasing a little.” It was obvious from his exclamation that he finally realized he wasn’t putting me on the spot with the suggestion of sleeping together in the same room. “I think we can spend a weekend together but that doesn’t mean that there will be any funny business between us.”
    “Well …I …don’t know…I was just...”
“Calm down, you’re just too easy to mess with tonight and of course sex is not out of the question, although I doubt that we could do anything in the house.”
“Okay, enough, I can’t take any more teasing and ribbing from you. You’re driving me mad and I am not going to listen to this any longer.” He kissed my hand like a true gentleman and then got into his car and sped off leaving a cloud of dust in his wake.

On Friday evening we were just on the outskirts of the city when his cell phone went off, he hit speaker and said, “Mom, before you ask, yes we are on the way and should be there before 10 PM.”
“How did you know it was me?”
“I have caller ID and besides, you always call before I come to visit just to make sure I didn’t change my mind because dad always grills me when I got there. Not to worry, I’m coming but I have decided to bring a guest, so can you have my room prepared for two instead of one?”
“Hmm, I gather that a lady will be joining you, my dear?”
“Yes, and you’ll meet her when we get there in a couple of hours. Promise me that you and dad won’t embarrass me.”
Giggling she said, “You know we can’t make that promise, it’s the one joy I have in my life.”
“Okay, I guess I had that coming for staying away so long.”
“Indeed, and you know how lonely this place feels without people filling it up. It will be nice to chat about things besides your father’s business, art and which wine goes with what food.”
“Don’t listen to your mother son, you know she lives for this stuff and wouldn’t want it any other way.”
“I know, father, but sometimes I think that she would be just as happy in a tiny house on a cul-de-sac than in that big house.”
“Perish the thought, can you imagine all the neighbors coming
