for him if that’s okay with you.”
“Of course, you are Kane’s family.” I opened the door wider, pretending that I wasn’t on to them.
I directed them to a chair and prayed that they weren’t here to harm us.
“So Evelyn, how are you and Kane doing?” They thought I was my sister.
“We’re doing well. You know how it goes.”
“Certainly.” The silence was awkward, but I didn’t know what else to say. My nerves were on edge.
“Would you like something to drink?” I asked them, needing to keep the civility from slipping.
“Sure, I’ll help,” the supposed Arabella said.
I was anxious and Kane knew it. I’m coming, babe.
I thought it was safe to walk into the kitchen with her as long as I directed her away from the knives, but I was wrong. Before I could react, I was hit with a Taser.

I felt murderous rage when I realized it wasn’t Gage here for me. I called for Carolyn in my head but got no damn response. It freaked me the fuck out. I didn’t know what they wanted, but I had a feeling it was for me to either be dead or surrender my Alpha rights. We couldn’t do that voluntarily. We must fight to the death for it, so I knew what this was going to come down to.
I needed a plan of attack because whoever it was knew about the closeness between Gage and Arabella. I was trying not to freak out and shift before I got in the house. Being seen shifting would be devastating to our kind. Parking around the corner, I walked towards the house from the back where the wind was blowing in the opposite direction.
I saw a rented car in the driveway. They hadn’t left yet. When I looked through the window, I couldn’t believe who I saw. Why would they come after us?
Knowing I was taking on an easier target didn’t sit well with me because they still had my mate who couldn’t fend for herself. I could hear them talking.
“Dana, we’re going to be loaded.”
“I know, Dan. I can’t believe it’s this easy. Come on, we got to get her out of here before Holt comes back. You know we’re no match for him.”
“Yes, but we have his mate so he’ll surrender himself first before he lets us take her.”
“We’re getting paid big money to bring her to Maxwell.” Maxell? Maxwell Overton. He was a part of our pack, but I sent him off with his tail between his legs five years ago when he started bringing drugs into the pack. There was nothing worse than a cracked out shifter. They raged and it got insane. I had loads of help from the Wolfe Creek pack, but it was still a struggle. Weeks of withdrawal and shifting had been mad chaos and it was what Overton was going for. Now he wanted revenge.
I needed them away from Carolyn before I could do anything. They made it too easy for me. His phone rang and they both went to answer it, leaving Carolyn in the living room unattended. She groggily moved and I spoke to her.
Babe, quietly hurry to the laundry room window. I’m waiting out here.
She gave me a subtle nod before looking around then crept to the back where I could grab her. I hoped to hell they didn’t look for her just yet. I watched her get to the window with fear in her eyes. Just as she got there, her eyes bugged and I felt her pain as she screamed inside. She dropped to the ground and all the wolf in me came out.
I crashed through the window, shifting in the process. The Alpha in me roared and snarled before I attacked Dan first. He fell fast and so did the fucking weapon he used on my woman. I knocked him out and lunged at Dana next. There was no room for mercy. Striking her across the face, I laid her out. Dan must have come to while I was dealing with his cracked-out sister because he was on me before I had a chance to react. That was when Caro pulled a Cat move and shifted into a beautiful, deadly grey wolf. She attacked Dan, blindsiding him in the ribs, cracking them on impact. The crunching sound was followed by him wincing in pain. I couldn’t believe they broke so easily, but then
