few.â
âBut thatâs not the biggest problem?â Cole hazarded another guess, looking at Isaiahâs expression. Smoke curled around his face casting an air of mystery. As he narrowed his eyes, Cole could see what Addy saw in him. The man radiated strength and power.
âThere are those that think that Reapers are in a position to take over this country now that itâs in such disarray after the war.â
âFuck, they want to go into politics?â
Isaiah shook his head. âNo. They want power. A lot of power. They see themselves as superior, but the hitch in the giddyup is Reaper law.
âSo how does Addy play into this?â
Jones shook his head. âShit. We need whiskey for this.â
âI donât have any more, do you?â
Jones shrugged. âJust one of the many things on the to-do list.â
âSetting up a bar?â
âAt this point weâd settle for the sufficient contents for the bar, but yeah. Liquor is scarce.â
âThen I guess weâll have to make due with cigarettes. So spill it.â
âReapers are different. Youâve seen it yourself.â
Monsters
whispered through his mind.
âMake your point.â
âItâs not an easy one to make to a human.â
âIâm getting damn tired of people calling me human with a sneer in their voice.â
Isaiah took another drag on his cigarette, shook his head, and flicked off the ash. âAnyone ever tell you for a man who is living on borrowed time, youâve got a lot of attitude?â
âIâve been told a lot of things.â
Isaiah looked at him from the corner of his eye. âIn this case, you ought to listen.â
Cole knew what Isaiah meant, what he was trying to tell him. He was in charge of this band, but his control was not absolute. At any time Cole could find himself under attack. As if he didnât know it. The energy humming under his skin was a constant warning.
âNoted. Now, get on to telling me whatâs going on with Addy.â
âSheâs making her home here.â
âSo I noticed.â
âYou donât approve.â
âNo.â
âShe canât go back with you.â
âSo you say.â
âItâs the way it is.â
âWhy?â
âSheâs Reaper now.â
âEven if that marriage you held is legal, she can be un-Reapered in the time it takes for a judge to hit his gavel on the stand.â
Isaiahâs lip lifted in a snarl, and his eyes took on a strange glow. The energy that pulsed out from him pummeled Cole with hard, invisible blows.
âYou will not take her from me.â
Cole was beginning to get that impression. âAnd you canât keep whatâs not yours.â
âSheâs my mate. There is no part of Addy that doesnât belong to me.â
Cole didnât like the images that came with that. âBeing with you will only get her hurtââ
âYou saw her,â Isaiah cut in. âDoes she look hurt?â
âNo.â Dammit, she didnât. She looked like Addy, yet different somehow. âNot yet.â
In a wink the other manâs energy disappeared, and his face became a flat, expressionless mask. Cole wasnât impressed.
âYouâd do well not to rouse the beast in us.â
âIâll do whatever it takes to get answers.â
Isaiah took another drag on his cigarette, the tip glowed bright orange in the deepening gloom. Around them the crickets stilled. His energy seethed.
âEven if those answers donât exist?â
âThey exist. Itâs just a matter of hunting them down.â
âAddy said you were persistent.â
âI showed up here, didnât I?â
âI told her you would. She wasnât happy about it.â
âWhy?â
Isaiah stubbed out his cigarette on the sole of his boot. âShe worries youâll judge her.â
