be. I know that. Youâre a very intelligent man. Iâve noticed those books you carry around with you.â
âBut I settled on being a gunfighter?â Frank said, amusement in his voice.
âWell . . . I really didnât mean it like that.â
âIâm just kidding you, Jeff.â
âOh ... all right. Frank?â
âYep.â
âWeâre running a little low on supplies.â
âYeah. Weâre about a day and a half out of Salida. Weâll provision up close to there at a little place I know near some springs. Salida used to be called South Arkansas; then some folks renamed it. The whole damn area is tough, so stay close and watch your mouth.â
âDonât you worry about that. I am your silent partner.â
âStill lots of hanging in that area, especially in Buena Vista. Thatâs a mean judge there. I came through there about five years ago and counted five bodies swinging out on the edge of town.â
âSurely youâre joking.â
âNope. His name is Judge Lynch.â
âNow I know youâre kidding me!â
âNope. I sure am not. Thatâs his name. Quite a number of whorehouses in those towns. One-Eyed Sallyâs got the biggest one.â
âYouâve been in them?â
âNope. But Iâve ridden past them a few times. They do quite a business, let me tell you.â
âJudge Lynch?â
Frank laughed at his young friend. âThatâs right. But weâll cut south of that town.â
âOh?â
âYep. I know a shortcut over to Buffalo Pass and then weâll follow the Saguache for a ways down to a stage stop and tradinâ post. After that it really gets into some wild country. Youâll see the beauty of the territory. Something youâll remember for the rest of your life.â
âWilder than this?â
âSon, you havenât seen nothinâ yet.â

âIâve lost all sense of time out here,â Jeff said. âWhat is the date?â
âI think itâs November,â Frank replied. âBut I wouldnât take any bets on it.â
âMy word! Itâll be Christmas before long.â
âI reckon so.â
âYou celebrate Christmas, donât you?â
âNot in a long time, Jeff.â
âI always enjoyed the holidays. Itâs such a wonderful gay time.â
âYou have family back there?â
âOh, yes. My parents. My brothers and sisters. Uncles and aunts and lots of cousins.â
âThink youâll go back someday?â
Jeff didnât immediately reply and Frank understood: The West could cast a powerful spell on a man. It could be pure hell on a woman, but many men who traveled out here ended up staying. The vastness of the West could be hypnotic.
âI donât know, Frank,â Jeff finally replied. âIf I can make some kind of living out here, I believe Iâll stay.â
âI thought that might be your answer. Doesnât take long for the West to grab hold on a man.â
Jeff looked up at the sky. âLooks odd.â
âLooks like snow,â Frank told him. âAnd it might be a heavy one too. Or it might blow past. Anyway, weâre only a few miles from the Springs. Weâll hole up there until it blows over. Give the horses some rest and weâll provision up. Maybe get us a bath.â
âI itch all over,â Jeff said.
âCooties.â
âSounds disgusting. And my clothes are filthy.â
âWelcome to the trail, Jeff. It isnât so bad during the spring and summer. Man with a bar of soap can get himself a good wash in a creek or river. It gets tough during the cold months. Weâll get our clothes washed there too. Then the hard pull starts.â
âHow far are we from Durango?â
âCouple of weeks.â
âThe vastness of the West is very nearly overwhelming. For a couple of days after
