not being able to shower was just toogross for me. The smell of pierogi coming from the Russian restaurant down the block is bad enough!â
Rain tossed a couch pillow at Vin. âThanks, buddy. Just what I needed, you telling a potential roommate that I stink.â
âI didnât say you stink ⦠just that weâd all be in trouble if I didnât fix that shower.â
Rain turned to Sami. âWatch out for this guy,â she warned. âHe grew up in Brooklyn. You know no one from the OBs can be completely trusted.â
Sami tore her gaze from Vin and looked at Rain curiously. âOBs?â
âOuter boroughs,â Vin explained. âBrooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. Rayna here is a total Manhattan snob.â
âCan I help it if I donât see any point in hanging out with the bridge-and-tunnel crowd?â she teased back.
âRayna? Oh, Iâm sorry,â Sami apologized quickly. âI thought you said your name was Rain.â
âIt is,â Rain assured her.
âOh, right,â Vin teased. âThatâs your name
now
. But all your friends and familyat home call you Rayna. Itâs Rayna Goldfein,â he told Sami.
âOh, no!â Rain exclaimed suddenly. âYouâve told her my deep, dark secret. Iâm sorry, Sami, but now Iâm going to have to kill you.â
For a moment, Sami stared at her, not quite sure if she was kidding.
âRelax, kiddo, it was a joke,â Rain pointed out.
Sami smiled nervously. âI knew that. Iâm just a little shaky after what happened at the Beresford Arms.â
âThere was a murder at the hotel where sheâs been staying,â Rain explained to Vin.
âThatâs tough stuff to deal with,â Vin consoled her. âAnyone you know?â
Sami shook her head. âNo. I donât know anyone there. I kind of keep to myself.â Talking about the Beresford Arms made Sami nervous. She quickly changed the subject. âWhat made you change your name?â
Raina shrugged. âThe agency decided that Rayna Goldfein didnât have enough pizzazz. So now Iâm just Rain G.â
âI like it,â Sami assured her.
âI like
you,
â Rain replied. She held out her hand toward Sami. âThis is going to work out great. Two small-town girls in the big, bad city. We could take over!â
Sami reached out and shook Rains hand, sealing the deal.
âHeaven help us,â Vin teased.
âYouâd better watch out,â Rain teased back. âNow itâs two against one in this hallway. Country girls versus Brooklyn boy. You donât stand a chance.â
Vin looked back into Samiâs blue eyes. âI think Iâm lost already.â
It was almost eleven oâclock before Sami had a chance to check in with Celia and Al. Luckily, with the time difference, her best friend and her brother were still wide awake.
âHello?â Celia answered.
âHey, Celia!â Sami replied excitedly. âGuess where I am?â
âThe Plaza Hotel?â Celia asked.
âNo.â
âThe Staten Island Ferry?â
âAt this time of night?â Sami said, surprised.
âYouâre right,â Celia agreed with a laugh in her voice. âWhere could you be calling from at eleven at night, New York time? How about prison?â Celia teased.
Sami giggled. âOf course not.â
âOkay, I give up. Where are you?â
âIn my
apartment
!â Sami squealed.
âYou got an apartment already?â
âYup,
and
I got a job!â
Now it was Celiaâs turn to squeal. âYou got a design job? Ohmigod! This is so exciting!â
âWell, itâs not that exciting,â Sami admitted. âItâs not exactly a design job. But I
am
working at a design house. Iâm the receptionist at Ted Fromme Fashions.â
âOh.â Celia clearly struggled not to sound
