rideââ
âNo, thatâs okay,â Tina said. âI ride, but itâs been a whileâ¦.â
âSheâs not riding,â Zach said from the other end of the barn.
Her heart jumping in her chest, Tina whipped her head around to stare at him. He wore jeans, a T-shirt, a hat, a pair of boots and a frown.
âI wasnât planning on riding,â Tina said defensively. âI was just exploring.â
âJust donât get into trouble,â he said.
Tina frowned. âWhat kind of trouble? Iâm just walking around your ranch. I canât stay cooped up in the house forever.â
âI guess not,â he said as he moved toward her. âHildie told me you went for a walk.â
âWhy doesnât that surprise me?â Tina murmured.
âAnd a good morning to you,â Eve said. âSamsonâs making progress.â
Zach nodded. âGood to know,â he said. âI hope he hasnât been too much of a pain in the butt.â
âNo more than his owner,â Eve said.
Zach shot her a withering glance. âAnyone ever tell you that you look like your aunt?â
âBite me,â Eve said and turned her back to him.
âHowâs the job going?â he asked.
âItâs going,â she said. âI donât love it. I donât hate it.â
âJust havenât found what youâre looking for,â he said.
âIt pays well,â she said over her shoulder. âThatâs good enough for me. And, hey, donât be so hard on your visitor. Sheâs polite, which is more than you can say about yourself.â She stomped out of the barn.
Feeling Zachâs gaze on her, Tina wondered about the relationship between Zach and Eve. Antagonistic, yet vaguely caring.
âDonât even think about riding a horse,â he said.
âI didnât,â she said. âIn more than a fictional sense,â she added, seeing a flash of alarm on his face. âWhen I walked into the barn, I remembered how much I enjoyed riding. How much I missed it, but now isnât the time toââ
âExactly,â he said in a crisp tone. âNow is not the time to start this particular hobby again. Itâs too dangerous for you and the baby.â
She saw a darkness deepen in his eyes and wondered where that originated. She thought about what Hildie had said to her. She thought about how much she didnât know about him.
Lifting her chin, she narrowed her eyes at him. âPart of the reason I came here was because you and I should get to know each other because youâre the father of my child. We need to start that process. Iâm not going to be here forever.â
âYouâre not,â he said, lifting a dark brow. âIs there somewhere youâd rather be?â he asked.
The south of France, a small town in Italy, a Greek island. Somewhere she could rest, somewhere she wouldnât have toanswer to her brother, somewhere she could plan her and her babyâs future. Somewhere she could disappear for a while. At the moment, Zachâs ranch was perfect. That would change as soon as the paparazzi showed up.
âI havenât had time to make plans,â she said. âI need to figure out whatâs best for my child and for me.â
âIs it not best for your child to have access to his or her father?â he challenged.
âIn most circumstances, that would be best,â she conceded. âBut the longer I stay here, the more I realize I donât know that much about you.â
He lifted his lips in a dangerous grin. âAre you afraid Iâm a bad influence?â
Her heart fluttered at the bad boy expression on his face, but she refused to give in to his charm. âAs you Americans would say, the jury is out. I need to know more. You havenât been around much.â She couldnât resist a wicked urge to goad. âDo I frighten
