road.
Tina gripped the door with one hand and the edge of her seat with the other. âAre we in a hurry?â she asked.
Hildie shrugged and turned the country radio station to a higher decibel. âNot really. I just donât like to waste time getting where I want to go.â
Tina swallowed over a knot of panic in her throat. âHow far to the store?â
Hildie waved her hand and guided the steering wheel with her knee. âNot long,â she said and cackled. âYou can be sure Iâll get there in no time.â
If we donât meet our maker first, she thought and continued her death grip. Hildie gave a running commentary on the history of the area and talked about her niece, Eve, apparently her pride and joy.
When Hildie pulled into a parking lot and screeched to a stop, Tina breathed a sigh of relief.
âHere we are,â Hildie said and winked at her. âThey have a maternity department here.â
Tina walked into the store and felt as if sheâd stepped into a foreign country. The truth was that her assistant often shopped for her. Tina rarely visited retail stores. She was too busy.
She felt Hildie studying her. âWhatâs wrong?â she asked. âDonât they have what you want?â
âThey seem to have everything. I just donât know where to start. Iâm overwhelmed,â she said.
Hildie laughed. âOkay, letâs start with the basics, then. Underwear,â she said and led her to the intimates department.
Tina chose several pairs of stretchy panties and a couple bras.
âYouâll get bigger there, too,â Hildie warned.
Feeling self-conscious, Tina shrugged. âIâll deal with that later. Iâd like to get a couple of skirts and a few tops.â
âThe maternity department is overââ
âIâm not quite ready for that,â Tina said. âIâll just buy a size larger than usual.â
âIf youâre sure,â Hildie said.
âIâm not that big yet,â Tina whispered. âIâm not that far along in my pregnancy. Iâm not ready for everyone to knowââ
âYour Highlyness, if Zach noticed your baby bump in that newspaper, then everyone knows,â Hildie said dryly.
âEveryone doesnât know at first sight, though. I could just use a little breathing room,â Tina said.
Hildie studied her for a long moment. âI can understand that. Letâs find you a nice little skirt or two.â
Less than fifteen minutes later, they left the store with toiletries, underwear, two skirts, three tops and a dress.
âYou wonât be able to hide it much longer, dear,â Hildie said.
Tinaâs stomach knotted. âI know. Iâm just buying a little time.â
âAre you ashamed?â Hildie asked.
âWell, you have to admit itâs not the optimal situation,â Tina said, gazing out the window as they whizzed past the barren landscape.
âAre you ashamed of Zach?â
Tina whipped her head around to look at Hildie. âNo. Iâm embarrassed because I should have been more careful, more responsible. Itâs not as if I were a teenager.â
âFrom what Zachary told me, you were busy being an adult when you were a teenager. No time for impulsiveness or getting into trouble.â
âThat still doesnât excuseââ
âPardon me, Your Highlyness, but nobodyâs perfect. Evenprincesses arenât perfect. Youâre just lucky Zachary was the man who got carried away with you. Heâs a good man,â she said. âAnd itâs time he got pastâ¦â Hildieâs voice trailed off and she sighed.
âGot past what?â Tina asked.
Hildie frowned. âItâs not my place to say.â
Tina blinked, shocked that Hildie would consider any subject outside propriety. After all, Zachâs housekeeper had freely given her opinions on underwear, pregnancy and
