hug.
âCordy, darling,â Victoria exclaimed. âYou scared Granny terribly. You could have been lost or hurt!â
âNuh-uh, Granny,â Cordy insisted. âI was with Mickey. She took good care of me, and she taught me to play my own drums.â
Mickey stepped out from behind the gumball machine and blushed. âWe had fun,â she said.
âI should have known you were responsible for this,â Jade suddenly piped up. She was furious. âYou trashed my design.â
âI didnât trash it,â Mickey insisted. âI gave the client what she wanted. You never even thought to ask Cordy her opinion.â
âI love my dress now,â Cordy said, twirling around in it. âIsnât it beautiful, Granny?â
Victoria looked it over from top to bottom. âItâs, itâsâ¦â
âVery Cordy,â Mickey interrupted. âItâs everything she is and wanted in a party dress. I just helped her bring her vision to life.â
âI was going to say itâs divine,â Victoria added. âVery unique, just like my Cordy. How do I thank you?â
âUm, maybe you could just send Mr. Kaye an email and tell him I fixed the problem from the WDAA luncheon?â Mickey said.
âIâll do more than that,â Victoria vowed. âIâll tell him myself in person.â
When Mickey returned to Apparel Arts on Monday morning, she was surprised to find Victoria sitting at the front of the studio with Mr. Kaye.
âWhy, thatâs very generous of you,â he was telling the designer as Mickey took her seat.
âWhatâs going on?â Gabriel whispered. âWhy is that uppity lady here?â
âGet a clue!â South leaned forward and smacked him on the head. âThat uppity lady is Victoria Vanderweil.â
âNo way!â Gabriel whistled through his teeth. âCool.â
Mickey was afraid to guess the reason for Victoriaâs visit to FAB, but she hoped it wasnât to report to her teacher that she had crashed Cordyâs party.
âClass,â Mr. Kaye addressed the room, tapping a ruler on his desk. âAttention, please. I am happy to share some very exciting news with you all.â
Mickey held her breath. It didnât sound like Victoria was ratting her out.
âMs. Vanderweil wishes to commend FAB and specifically one of our pupils for teaching her granddaughter a lesson in personal expression.â
Mars elbowed Mickey. âItâs you, isnât it?â
Mickey shrugged. She hoped so, but Mr. Kaye wasnât looking in her direction.
âWeâve all been invited to view the Victoria Vanderweil fall-winter collection on the runway during New York Fashion Week,â Mr. Kaye continued. âItâs a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all of youâ¦â
He turned to face Mickey. âAnd we have Mickey to thank for it.â
The class cheered and Mickey felt her cheeks flush.
âMy granddaughter has told me she wishes to follow in my footsteps,â Victoria said to Mickey. âConsidering last week she wanted to be an astronaut ballerina on the moon, itâs a great improvement. She canât stop designing and redesigning all her clothes. She didnât run away all weekend because she was so busy! Iâm very grateful, and I owe that to you.â
Mickey smiled. âShe always had it in her,â she told Victoria. âI just believed in her.â
âI assume you have someone who believes in you in the same way?â Victoria asked her.
âLots of someones,â Mickey said. âMr. Kaye, JC, my mom, my aunt Olive.â
âThen you are very luckyâand very talented,â Victoria added, winking. âWhy donât you bring all those someones along to my show. Iâll make sure you have seats in the front row.â
