faintly. âI didnât.â
Stevie came down the stairs, his hair still wet from his shower. He stared from Van to Brock to the large pile of suitcases to Maggie. Uh-oh. He was thinking the same thing she was.
Maggieâs dad came out of the den and shook hands warmly with Brock. âGlad you could join us,â he said, thenturned to Maggie. âVan told us Brock was giving her a ride over tonight, so we invited him to stay for dinner.â
âOh.â Maggie looked back at Stevie.
He shrugged. âI didnât overhear that part,â he mouthed to her. âYo, Van,â he said out loud. âYou planning to change your clothes between every bite of your roast beef?â
âIâm staying for a while.â Vanâs voice sounded brittle.
âOh, wow.â Stevie looked at Maggie again. They both loved their sister, but it was much easier to love her when she lived under a different roof. âWhat, is Mitch away on business or something?â
âOr something.â
Uh-oh.
The phone rang.
âIâll get it!â Maggie and Stevie said in unison.
But their mother picked it up in the kitchen. âItâs for you, hon,â she called to their father.
âIâll take it in the den.â He disappeared down the hall.
âHelp me get this stuff upstairs,â Vanessa commanded.
âYes, sir!â Stevie fired off a salute as Vanessa and Brock led the way. âSheâs staying for a while ,â he muttered out of the side of his mouth to Maggie.
âMattâs going to be here any minute,â Maggie muttered back.
âMatt?â Stevie was delighted. âThe friend youâre having dinner with is a Matt . Oh, boy.â
âDinnerâs almost ready,â their mother called from the kitchen.
âIâm going out. Iâve got a business dinner,â Maggie called back, loudly enough for Brock to hear. Except he was leaning close to Vanessa, listening intently to whatever she was saying.
âI canât hear you with the water running!â her mother called back.
âWhat are you going to do?â Stevie whispered to Maggie. âI knowâyou could invite him to stay for dinner, too.â
âBite your tongue!â
Stevie was laughing. âItâs the only solution. You know, this evening is turning out to be much more interesting than I thought.â
Maggie rammed Vanessaâs suitcase into the back of his leg.
âOuch!â he yelped.
âMargaret!â their father shouted from the bottom of the stairs. âI want to talk to you. Now.â
Maggie froze, looking at Stevie. Uh-oh.
âGod, whatâdya do?â he asked, sotto voce.
âIâm almost thirty years old,â she whispered back. âWhy do I feel as if Iâm thirteen and Iâve left the basketball out in the driveway?â
The doorbell rang.
Uh-oh. âIâll get it,â Maggie called, desperately trying to sound normal as she hurried down the stairs.
âIâll help!â Stevie dropped Vanâs suitcase and scrambled after her.
They both nearly crashed headlong into their father, who seemed to materialize out of thin air. He had on his fighting face.
âMaggie, that was just Bob Andersen on the phone,â he said. âHe just happened to mention that you quit your job this morning!â
âYo, Mags! Finally makinâ that rockinâ career move?â Stevie said approvingly.
âYou did what?â Vanessa came down the stairs, followed closely by Brock.
The doorbell rang again.
âShe quit her job at Andersen and Brenden.â Her father shook his head in disbelief.
âWill someone please answer the door?â Maggieâs mom came out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dishtowel.
âIâll get it,â Maggie said again, hurrying to reach the doorbefore her mother got there. She took a deep breath and pulled it open.
