his runny nose Baldrick-style on his sleeve. âWAIT!â
He stomped onto the platform and grabbed the megaphone from Frypot.
âDonât rush off!â he cried. âThereâs been a littleâ¦change of plans. Dragon Slayersâ Academy is open again. Yes, parents, youââ
Suddenly, a loud voice called out above the headmasterâs: âKNOCK KNOCK!â
Wiglaf cringed. It was Fergus!
Mordredâs violet eyes bulged. âWhoâ¦whoâs there?â he said.
âHarry!â cried Fergus.
âHarry?â cried the headmaster. âHarry who?â
âHarry up and finish your speech so we can all go home!â cried Fergus.
âHar-har!â laughed Prince Rex. âThatâs a good one!â
âNo need to go!â cried Mordred. âSchool is open!â
âBut, sir!â said Torblad. âWeâve graduated. Weâre done!â
âYes! Weâre done!â shouted students and parents, and they rose from their seats. There was much hugging and slapping of backs and then the families headed for the castle gate.
âCome, poppet,â Queen Barb said to Erica. âLetâs go home. Popsy and I have to pack!â
âRoyals!â cried Mordred, running up to them. âI want to make you aware of a special DSA graduate degree. Your Erica is a perfect candidate!â
âSorry,â said Queen Barb. âErica has other plans.â
Mordred turned to Queen Marge and bowed. âWhere is that fine lad of yours?â he asked. âHappy to have him in Class I! Or, is he a very gifted lad? We can skip him up to Class II, no problem!â
âWe shall find a school closer to home,â said Queen Marge.
âAlas!â wailed Mordred. He staggered off, weeping bitterly.
Wiglaf turned to the dragons. âSoon DSA will be no more,â he said. âIf you still wish to be married here, we must act fast.â
He led the pair over to the sobbing headmaster. Dudwin tagged along.
âSir?â said Wiglaf. âThese dragons would like to be married here.â
âHere?â Mordred stopped staggering. He blew his nose on the hem of his tunic and looked up at the dragons with damp violet eyes.
âAt my castle?â he said.
Worm and Shirley nodded.
Mordred sniffed. âThis castle has just had a major makeover,â he told the happy couple. âPerhaps you saw that as you flew in. And golden castles donât come cheap.â
âNo problem,â
said Shirley.
âMy family is loaded.â
âLoaded?â yelped Mordred. âAs in tons of dragon gold?â
Shirley nodded.
âTons and TONS.â
Mordred bit the side of his thumb. He was near tears again. But now they were tears of joy.
Molwena, Fergus, and the brothers walked over to Wiglaf and Dudwin.
âReady to go home, lads?â asked Molwena.
âNot yet,â Wiglaf said. âThe dragons are about to get married.â
âWe want to stay for the wedding,â said Dudwin.
Molwena sighed. âI love a good wedding.â
âYou stay then,â Fergus told her. He turned to Wiglaf. âBring us some gold when you come home,â he said. âThatâs why we sent you off to school in the first place.â
Fergus pounded his chest with his fist, producing an earsplitting farewell burp. Then he led eleven of his sons toward the castle gate.
At the gate, the yellow-haired brothers turned and all together called, âCome home soon, Wiggie! We miss you!â
Wiglaf smiled and waved. Maybe going back home wouldnât be so bad after all.
âWe miss pounding on you!â called one brother.
âAnd tripping you!â called another.
âAnd giving you noogies!â called the littlest brother.
Wiglaf stopped waving. Going home was going to be much worse than he had imagined.
