the time she lets him lead. But when it comes down to doing his will or Godâs will, she goes with God. Itâs really simple.â
âBut I canât say that Steveâs going against God. Heâs just mistaken. Misguided. Wrong .â She took a few more bites, as she thought through what Sylvia was telling her. âThat dying to yourself stuff is hard, Sylvia. Who wants to die?â
âNo one does,â Sylvia said, âbut Iâm telling you, thatâs the key. You have to die to yourself if you want to be happy in a marriage. Period.â
The advice only frustrated Cathy more. She tried to visualize what the advice meant, but it evaded her. She told herself it didnât matter.
The important thing was that she had gotten Sylviaâs mind off of her biopsy, at least for a little while.

The night of the church program came with a flurry of activity at the Dodd house. Brenda lined Joseph, Leah, and Rachel up in her bathroom, and applied the heavy makeup that would make their fair skin look less pale under the harsh lights.
Joseph had a strange look on his face. âIâm nervous. I might throw up.â
âYouâre not going to throw up.â Brenda wiped her makeup sponge under his eyes. âYouâre going to do it just like youâve done at rehearsal, and youâll be wonderful.â
Leah stood in front of the mirror, spraying her spiked hair. âThis is so embarrassing,â she said.
David stood, grinning, in the doorway. âWhat is?â
âThat Rachel and I have to be Spencerâs entourage. Like weâd really follow around some eight-year-old kid like we were in love with him.â
âHeâs dressing like Elvis,â Brenda told David. âHeâs so cute. And Leah and Rachel have to follow him around like groupies.â
âOkay, youâve got to videotape this for me,â David said.
Brenda shook her head and went for the blush. âDavid, I canât. Iâm helping backstage.â
âThen let Daniel do it.â
âHeâs working the lights. Iâm sorry, honey, but if you want to see it, youâll have to come.â She brought the blush brush to Josephâs cheeks, but he jerked away.
âHuh-uh, Mama! You canât put that on me!â
âWhy not? Iâm just trying to give you a little color.â
âIâll look like a girl!â
âJoseph, all actors wear makeup.â
âNot me,â he said. âThis mud all over my face is bad enough, but I do not want all that pink stuff on my cheeks.â
Rachel gave Joseph an assessing look. âMamaâs right. You need contour, Joseph. Here, let me do it.â
Joseph grabbed the brush out of his motherâs hand so Rachel couldnât get it. âIâm finished, Mama. I have all the makeup I need. Please donât let her touch me.â
Brenda laughed and took the brush back. âAll right, Joseph. Go put on your suit, and be careful not to get the makeup on your white shirt.â
She left the girls primping in the bathroom and grinned up at David. âThis is going to be some kind of night.â
âI canât believe thereâs no one who can tape this. What about Tory and Barry? If Spencer and Brittany are in it, surely theyâll be videotaping.â
âThey might. But Toryâs helping backstage, too. And I think Barry is helping with the props.â
She stuck her head in Josephâs room and saw him carefully unbuttoning the white shirt on its hanger. He already had his pants and shoes on, and she saw the thick scars from his heart transplant on his chest. Stepping into the room, she helped him get the shirt on without getting makeup on his collar.
âI canât wait to get this stuff off my face.â
âYou can go right from your curtain call to the sink,â Brenda said.
David grew quiet as the activity grew more frenzied, and
