they arrived, a park ranger was waiting to greet them. âLadiesâor should I say Divasâwelcome to Black Boulder Forest! Iâm Ranger Sam and Iâm at your service.â He sounded so enthusiastic, like this would be the best trip of their lives. But no one was buying it.
âCan you please show us to our accommodations?â Liberty said, dragging her backpack behind her. âI could really use a nice shower and spa treatment right now. Whereâs the hotel?â
The ranger laughed. âIâm sorry, but your only accommodations are the tents youâll set upwhen you make your way to the bottom of the mountain.â
Miss Toni held up a vinyl duffel. âGot âem right here! I hope theyâll be to your liking, Liberty. I rented the top-of-the-line model with high-wind protection.â
âThatâs great!â Ranger Sam replied. âIt can get very cold out there at night. Youâre in for a treat.â
Scarlett glanced over at Liberty. She looked like she was going to keel over. âWhat? No hotel? Not even a villa or cabana or
something
?â she exclaimed.
âWhere are the beds?â Scarlett asked. âThere are beds to sleep in, arenât there?â
Miss Toni smiled brightly. âOf course there are! I got each and every one of you your very own comfy sleeping bag.â She tossed a green sack at Liberty. âCatch!â
Then she handed a lantern to Scarlett, a bag filled with pots and pans to Rochelle, and two totes stocked with food to Bria and Gracie.âI highly recommend the powdered hummus and the dehydrated sweet potatoes,â she said. âYum!â
âWhat about breakfast?â Gracie piped up. It was her favorite meal of the day, and she couldnât imagine it without a heaping pile of pancakes or her momâs apple-cinnamon oatmeal.
âGlad you asked!â Toni replied. She handed her a dry box of bran cereal. âHelp yourself. Thereâs no milk, of course.â
Bria rifled through the bag. There was absolutely nothing appetizing and her stomach was growling. âMaybe we can make a campfire and roast some sâmores,â she suggested.
âThat would be nice,â Toni answered, âif you had any marshmallows and knew how to light a fire by rubbing two sticks together. Good luck with that!â She walked over to Ranger Sam. âYou guys should definitely hit the trail right away. Itâll take you several hours to reach the bottom, and you donât want to lose the daylight.â
Bria gulped. âYou mean, weâll have to walkthrough the woods in the dark?â She tugged on Rochelleâs sleeve and whispered, âWerewolves!â
Scarlett held up her lantern. âI guess thatâs why we have this.â She looked at Miss Toni. âWhat happens if we get lost or in trouble?â
Ranger Sam handed her a whistle. âWe wonât be far behind, and Iâll be keeping an eye on you. But you girls are leading
us
, not the other way around.â He held up a pair of binoculars. âIf you get into a bind, just toot for help.â
Toni crossed her arms over her chest. She was not about to change her mind and let them all just go home. âTick tock,â she said. âTime to hit the trail.â
Chapter 12
Not-So-Happy Trails
Scarlett looked around, trying to get her bearings and figure out where they were on the map. âYouâd think they would have marked it with an âXâ â¦,â she said. âYou think weâre here?â She held up the map so Rochelle could see it.
âYour guess is as good as mine,â Rochelle replied.
âLet me see,â Liberty said as she pulled it out of Scarlettâs hands.
âWhy? You think youâre Dora the Explorer?â Rock teased.
âNo, but I can find my way expertly around the Riverside Square Mall floor plan. This canâtbe much harder.â She pointed
